Monthly Round Ups

October 2017 – Monthly Round Up

October, Autumn

Dark mornings and dark nights…booo! Yep the clocks have gone back here in blighty and we now have to make the most of the few hours of sunlight we get each day. The cold weather has also hit us full force meaning boots and jumpers are now wardrobe staples. October passed by in a blur because we were super busy and we are certainly not complaining. Three weekends out of the four we headed somewhere and had a great time, the last weekend of the month, we made the conscious decision not to go anywhere and instead have a weekend at home catching up on life admin, binge-watching season 2 of Stranger Things on Netflix and hiding from trick or treaters! Read on to find out what we got up to.

Travels

Ghent, Belgium

Ghent Waffle Belgium

The first weekend of October saw me hop on my first solo flight and head to Ghent, Belgium on a press trip with Visit Flanders. Even though I had visited Ghent before with Mr ESLT years ago, it was lovely to return and see the sites for myself and (over)indulge in all the yummy treats available in the city. It was also lovely to meet some fantastic fellow bloggers – Emma from Adventures of a London Kiwi, Danielle from While I’m Young and Lavinia from The Continent Hop.

Liverpool, England

Albert Dock, Liverpool

Beatles Statue, Liverpool

The next weekend saw Mr ESLT and I pack up the car and head across the country to Liverpool to work with Travelodge on their #travelodgers campaign. We checked into Liverpool Central Travelodge and for 24 hours we explored the city. We had a great time exploring the Docks, eating at Alma de Cuba and topping up our knowledge of The Beatles by taking a guided city and Beatles tour with Liverpool City Sights. It really is a vibrant city that we need to return to and explore more.

Leiden, The Netherlands

Leiden, The Netherlands Windmill

Leiden, The Netherlands Waterway

Our last weekend trip of the month was to Leiden in The Netherlands (post to follow). We jumped on the P&O ferry from our hometown of Hull in the North of England and crossed the North Sea. Visit Leiden put together a great itinerary for us including fantastic accommodation, food, a boat trip and museum passes. We found Leiden to be the perfect little place for a quick weekend getaway. We were also lucky with the weather, meaning we could enjoy al fresco dining, which is always great in October.

Live Music

We love live music and last week we headed to Nottingham to see London Grammar, one of my favourite bands and they were brilliant, definitely worth the 5 hour round trip. We also managed to get tickets to see the Foo Fighters next year in Manchester. Having seen them a couple of years ago in Sunderland, we are beyond excited to see them again, we just have to wait until June!

Upcoming Travels

Airplane

The Yorkshire Dales

Every year Mr ESLT and I pack up the car and head to somewhere in Yorkshire to enjoy a lodge weekend and it’s that time of year again. Mid-November we are heading to the Yorkshire Dales to enjoy a weekend of comfort food, countryside walks, chilling out in the hot tub, enjoying copious amounts of vodka and binge watching a box set – this year we have chosen Narcos. We can’t wait to switch off for the weekend and CHILL OUT, something we haven’t had much time for recently.

Abu Dhabi, UAE

This time last year we were heading to Iceland, one of the coldest places I have ever visited. We had an amazing time however it reaffirmed to me that I am not designed for cold weather. Therefore, this year we are heading to Abu Dhabi for a week in the sun. After visiting Dubai last year for my birthday we knew that we wanted to return to the UAE ASAP. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but the sun and the service you receive make it worthwhile. We still have nothing planned and maybe for once, we are just going to go with the flow. Although we still have three weeks before we fly, meaning I still have plenty of time to plan things.

Travel Planning

Frankfurt, Germany

We love Christmas Markets, especially German ones, therefore when a friend suggested we visit one this year we jumped at the chance, especially as the “airline who shall not be named” was offering £9.99 flights to Frankfurt. Bring on the glühwein and sausage.

Lake District, England

We love the Lake District, especially Ambleside and we try and head that way at least once a year. Therefore, we have organised a visit for the first weekend of 2018. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather is on our side and we can actually make the journey. We will be staying at the award-winning Ees Wyke Country House Hotel and it looks so cosy – we can’t wait!

Vilnius, Lithuania

As an apology from Ryanair for cancelling our flights to Luxembourg back in September, we got a full refund, of course, and we also got a £80 voucher each to book alternative flights, which was actually a nice surprise. Therefore, we decided to book flights to Vilnius at the end of February, I can only imagine how cold it is going to be – brrrrr! We can’t wait to tick off country number 73!
