Well it’s officially autumn and we’ve put the heating on, yep that lovely late summer that we had our fingers crossed for did not materialise and instead the big coats and umbrella have been dug out. I know a lot of people romanticise about autumn, not us I’m afraid and the sooner we escape to Abu Dhabi at the end of November the better. BRING ON THE SUN. So what have we been up to this month? Well, what started as a very promising September went rapidly downhill but as the saying goes ‘the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry’. Read on to find out why….
NOWHERE! Yep nowhere 🙁 I had booked flights back in May for mid-September to Luxembourg for Mr ESLT’s (belated) birthday celebrations and even though Ryanair (they are however called something much worse now in our house) only cancelled 2% of their flights, of course, they cancelled ours just 3 days before we were due to set off! Yes, we got a full refund and we have applied for further compensation because…well, why not? But what we can’t get back are the nights we excitedly planned what we were going to do. So booooo to you Ryanair, boooooo!!!!
So to make up for the lack of travel in September, we have a pretty jam-packed October (yeah!!!) providing none of our flights are cancelled of course!
Today I’m (Vicky) heading to Ghent in Belgium on a press trip. It will actually be the first flight I’ll ever take on my own. Yep, I’m 34 and never flown by myself before. As a nervous flyer, I can’t say I’m looking forward to it but the opportunity to explore Ghent at the other end will make it worthwhile. I have actually been before but it was a long time ago so I’m excited to get back there and see more of the city. I will also get the opportunity to meet 3 other travel bloggers whilst there. If you’re interested in seeing what I get up to in Ghent as I’m getting up to it, don’t forget to follow along on social media.
Next weekend we have been invited to the awesome city of Liverpool, England by Travelodge. I must admit I have been to Liverpool on a few occasions however it has usually been for a hen weekend or just a night out. Therefore, I have never really had the opportunity to explore further than the bars and clubs in the city. So this time Mr ESLT and I are going to make the most of our visit and put together a guide to 24 hours in Liverpool, which will hopefully be helpful to first-time visitors. Fingers crossed for good weather, as I am particularly looking forward to checking out Liverpool docks.
Leiden, The Netherlands
Towards the end of the month, we will be heading to The Netherlands. Having been to Amsterdam and Rotterdam more times than we can count we have decided to check out the smaller cities and towns. We loved our visit to Utrecht earlier this year and have high hopes for Leiden. We actually only booked it a couple of days ago so haven’t had the chance to sit down together and work out what we are going to do whilst there. If you have ever been please send tips and recommendations over.
(Almost) Bern, Switzerland
This was the second kicker of the month. We were all set to fly to Bern in Switzerland on a press trip towards the end of October. However, after the dates and the city changed, it appeared we just couldn’t make it. We were gutted, but these things happen and hopefully one day soon we will get to visit Bern and the surrounding area as it looks STUNNING!
So having a month off travelling gave us plenty of time to plan upcoming trips, which are:
So as I mentioned above we are heading to Abu Dhabi a the end of November. After visiting Dubai last year we knew straight away that we wanted to return to The Gulf as soon as possible. Even though we plan to lay by the pool and take a, in our opinion, well-deserved break, I just know we will manage about one day before we want to explore. Therefore if you have visited Abu Dhabi please let us know what you recommend. Mr ESLT really wants to visit Ferrari World but that’s all we really have planned at the moment. Also, if you have any recommendations for somewhere to have a great Friday brunch please let us know.
Even though we won’t be heading to Bern during October we will be heading to Basel in December, meaning we will visit Switzerland before the year is out. We’re heading to Basel on 28th December and we will be seeing in 2018 there and I am already daydreaming about getting wrapped up in our big coats and boots and wandering the streets through the snow. Again, any tips or recommendations about what to do or see whilst we are there would be great, just let us know.
We have just booked flights to Oslo for next June where we will celebrate our 7th Wedding Anniversary (wow where did the years ago!). I have never been to Norway before so I’m really looking forward to visiting. From all the photographs I’ve seen and blogs I’ve read, it looks like we are going to have a great time. Again, as we have only just booked flights and the trip is not for another 8 months we haven’t got anything planned or booked yet, however, a fjord cruise is top of our list. Again tips and recommendations are of course welcome.
(Almost) Sofia, Bulgaria
And because bad things come in threes, this was our third of the month. Mr ESLT had booked our flights from our local airport, Doncaster to Sofia in May for my birthday. Unfortunately, Wizz Air (which are currently also on my airline hate list) have cancelled the route. They did offer to change our flights to Luton. However, that would mean a 4-hour drive to the airport as opposed to the 40 minutes to Doncaster and the flight times would have made it impossible. Therefore, Mr ESLT got a full refund and is now on the hunt for somewhere else to take me. Hopefully, we will get something booked ASAP.
