As proud Yorkshire folks, we are active advocates of the area. Whenever we get the chance we encourage people to visit and spend some time here. Brimming with beautiful beaches, cosmopolitan cities and not forgetting breathtaking countryside, there’s no wonder Yorkshire is often referred to as God’s Own Country. Living in East Yorkshire we love exploring our local area. We particularly enjoy finding new, exciting and unique things to do, attractions to visit and places to stay – especially glamping sites. Therefore, when we were invited to spend the evening at the Seaways Glamping and Camping site we couldn’t say no. We, therefore, chucked our overnight bag in the car. We were excited to make the short journey to see what the site and surrounding area has to offer.
If you are familiar with the area, Seaways may ring a bell with you. The Seaways Café is an institution in Fridaythorpe, located in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds and has been since it first opened in 1974. It’s popular with not only locals and passing tourists but also with the biker community. The car park, especially on a sunny day (yes, we do get them sometimes around these parts) is full of leather-clad guys and gals chatting, laughing and enjoying a good old fashioned cup of (Yorkshire, we hope) tea. Unfortunately, we rocked up just as the café was closing (4.00pm daily). Therefore didn’t get the opportunity to check out the café.
The Site
The site itself is easy to find as it’s directly off the A166. However, once ensconced in our cabin, it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. Yet we still had the luxury of the village and everything it offers right on our doorstep. With four luxury glamping cabins/pods and three pitches for tents all based around an ornamental lake in the middle, it’s a very pretty site. Even though we visited at the end of March, the spring flowers had already started to bloom, making the site colourful and inviting, even with the last of the winter chill in the air. The site also has its own carpark. Meaning access to our car, especially when unpacking and packing was super easy and we didn’t have to lug our luggage far.
The Glamping Cabins
Silver Birch
Our accommodation for the evening was the lovely Silver Birch glamping cabin. This cabin had everything we needed for a great stay. It can accommodate up to three people (two adults and one child) as it has a double bed with a single bunk over it (bedding is provided). The cabin has a small kitchen complete with fridge, kettle, microwave, cutlery, crockery and utensils. Together with the all-important en-suite bathroom (hand and bath towels available on request), meaning no late night journeys to the shower/toilet unit (of which there is one, but more about that later). It is also double glazed, meaning you can hear very little of what is going on outside, together with an electric heater making for a peaceful and cosy night’s sleep regardless of the time of year.
The Silver Birch also has a private decked area, perfect for relaxing on at the end of a long day of exploring the local area. The cabins and pods are also a nice distance apart from each other, ensuring that you have a level of privacy, even when on your decking. Unfortunately for us, it was just a tad too chilly to enjoy our BBQ dinner outside. However, we imagine it’s the perfect place during the summer months. For us though, our favourite thing about this cabin is the beautiful wildflower roof (something we have been looking at installing at home) – it looks stunning and makes the cabin blend even more into the beautiful Yorkshire countryside surrounding it.
Cedar
The other en-suite glamping cabin on site is the Cedar. Again, it has everything needed to make you feel at home – small kitchen, en suite shower room etc. The Cedar, like the Silver Birch, can sleep up to three people (double bed and a pull out single bed – bedding provided). This cabin also has a lovely decked area too, perfect for sitting outside on, relaxing and admiring the site from.
The Glamping Pods
Redwood
This brightly coloured Glamping pod is handmade based on an American Dutch Barn. It can sleep up to 4 people (double bed and full sized bunk beds – bedding provided). This pod is just that – a pod. However, the site does have communal facilities (kitchen/shower rooms – again more about those soon). The pod does have double sockets including USB charging ports for gadgets (phew!) and a small decking area.
English Oak
The last (but certainly not least) pod is the English Oak. This pod sleeps 2 people, therefore perfect for a quirky yet romantic couple’s getaway. Again, this pod is simply a pod (guests have access to the communal kitchen and shower facilities). Yet still has the benefit of double sockets including USB charging ports for gadgets together with a decked area outside.
All cabins/pods offer the following:
- Space for a baby (travel cot can be provided free of charge)
- Dogs welcome (£5 per night, per dog – maximum 2 dogs)
- Bedding provided
- Towels available
Camping
If camping is more your thing, not to worry Seaways Glamping and Camping site has you covered. There are three 4m x 3m pitches. This is a great option if you want to explore East Yorkshire but are possibly doing so on a budget. Having camped on a number of sites over the years, we have to say this is one of the prettiest and definitely the one with the nicest facilities. Also because there are only three pitches, we can’t imagine there would be any way you would feel crammed in.
Facilities
So the facilities we keep mentioning……the Seaways Glamping site has a wonderful kitchen pod called ‘The Pantry’. It’s perfect for people staying in the glamping pods or camping. As Silver Birch has a kitchen we didn’t need to use The Pantry but that didn’t stop us having a nosey at it. With full-size fridge, kettle, hob, grill and microwave – basically everything you need to cook up a storm. If you don’t fancy knocking up a three-course feast, you can also hire a BBQ (charcoal, lighters and utensils are included in the price of the hire) as we did for £10. There’s something about glamping/camping and burnt bangers that go hand in hand, isn’t there? There are also a couple of self-contained and extremely private shower/toilet/sink units which looked lovely, clean and modern. Again great if you are staying in one of the glamping pods or camping.
Things To Do In The Area
Being from the area we could wax lyrical about the many amazing things to do in and around Yorkshire. However, we decided just to pick out just five. Obviously, if you want any further recommendations, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
- Visit the city of Kingston upon Hull – having lived in Hull for a combined total of 45 years, we have a great love for it. It was UK City of Culture 2017 and the legacy is still living on. Visits to the Museum Quarter and The Deep should be at the top of your list of places to visit. And why not take a walk across the Humber Bridge (only advisable on good weather days!)
- Take a trip to Beverley – where we currently live and have done for just over 6 years. We love it here, it’s a wonderful market town (markets are held on a Saturday (bigger of the two) and Wednesday) with lots of lovely shops and eateries. Don’t forget to check out the Minister – it’s that big, you can’t miss it.
- Spend a day at the seaside – if you fancy a day frolicking on the beach followed by fish and chips and the obligatory seaside essential – an ice cream, then you are spoilt for choice. With both Bridlington and Scarborough approximately 20 miles away each, the toughest decision is choosing which one to visit first.
- Shop till you drop – you will find a lot of wonderful shops in York, together with a lot of independent boutique style shops in cobbled streets of The Shambles and not forgetting the York Fudge Kitchen (it is a-maz-ing!). If you’re looking for a bargain then head to the York Designer Outlet which has 120 designer stores.
- Get back to nature in the North Yorkshire Moors – if hiking, walking, running, cycling or simply exploring is your thing, the North Yorkshire Moors are perfect and not to mention absolutely beautiful. The scenery here is stunning and somewhere we love visiting when we want to get away from it all for a few hours.
Did We Enjoy Our Stay?
We loved our stay at Seaways Glamping and Camping site, especially as we had the home from home experience and luxury that the Silver Birch offers. The site is great because of the different types of accommodation on offer. Because it’s a compact site, we can’t imagine it’s very noisy as some of the larger glamping and camping sites can become, which makes for a relaxing break. The location is wonderful, it’s a great base for exploring East Yorkshire and beyond and the fact that it has a cafe on site for breakfast and lunch if you don’t want the hassle of cooking is awesome. This lovely new site is well worth a visit.
