This week’s guest post comes from My Return Ticket. She explains “I’ve travelled quite a few times, seen quite a few things, stayed quite a few places & have quite a few opinions of it all! I have had tens of thousands of views on my Tripadvisor posts & was pleased to receive messages from other travellers who wanted to know more about what I’d experienced. Hence, My Return Ticket…”
1.What is your name and where do you come from?
My name is Chris Franklin & my husband & I are from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada (that’s about an hour from Vancouver)
2. What sort of traveller are you? Full time / part time / business / backpacker etc?
My husband Andrew & I are definitely wishing we were full time travellers but we both work full time still so our travels are usually one big trip of a few weeks, once a year & then smaller trips around that. We do travel a bit for work as well but there’s usually not a lot of time to enjoy where we’re at.
3. How do you fund your travelling?
As I mentioned, we both work full time, so we save, save, SAVE for these travels!
4. Where is the best place you have ever been and why?
Oh gosh.. that’s a hard one… I’d have to say overall it was Abu Dhabi. It’s so, so different from our fairly rainy, green & grassy homeland! The people are very nice, there is a lot to see & do, the service given & the luxuriousness of the hotels is absolutely bar none so far. We have had other really great trips but from arrival to departure.. Abu Dhabi was the top! (maybe that’s why we’re already heading back there next month!)
5. Where is the worst place you have ever been and why?
I have to say it is an unfortunate tie… a stay this past summer in the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver and New Year’s last year at the Hyatt at Olive 8 in Seattle. Both fairly pricey hotels – very disappointing for the money.
6. Do you have a Bucket List? If so where are the 3 top places on it?
I suppose we do have one! We’d love to see Istanbul, Turkey & New York & Santorini, Greece.
7. What 3 things (apart from the essentials – food/water etc) do you always travel with?
Camera, blog essentials (notebook, pens, iPad etc) & here’s the really sexy one… allergy medications!
8. What makes you happy and why?
Experiencing different lifestyles, foods, climates, history & people while travelling is really, really amazing & enlightening but we are SO blessed at home… we have 5 grown kids & 5 young grandsons & they make our world go ’round! Family is everything!
9. How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I started to journal about 2014, but knew I would need to really research other successful bloggers to make sure I was presenting things people would really be interested in following & looking to for advice. I took a lot of courses, then spent time tweaking, writing, cataloging photos & video and then we launched my blog, website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest & Instagram all at once, just this year. I have always loved to write. I have edited & written quite a few articles & features for the community newspapers that I’ve worked at & I liked it more & more. I also love to travel with my husband. He’s a very good amateur photographer/videographer so you’ll be seeing a great variety of that on My Return Ticket soon! Combining two of the things I love, seems like a fabulous way to spend time!
10. What makes your blog unique and why should people read it?
I think everyone has a different view of a place when they travel there. For example many look for the beach party, some choose to shop till they drop, others enjoy crazy adventure. We crave the history of each place; the traditions & how each place & its people have changed over the years. Once we’ve decided on a trip, our favourite thing to do is find a good travel guide about our destination & start learning key phrases & bits of its history. I think we put just enough friendly conversation AND historical fact in the blog that it is easy reading but informative. Photos & video always help stimulate the senses as well… almost like being there… almost
Thanks so much to Vicky of Eat Sleep Love Travel for giving me the chance to guest blog!
From ESLT – thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Chris. It sounds like you and your husband are in the same boat as us regarding being part time travellers. It’s nice to read that you enjoyed Abu Dhabi, I think the UAE is somewhere people either love or hate. We actually visiting Dubai ourselves for the first time in May and hope we love it as much as you love Abu Dhabi (I imagine they are very similar). It’s great to read that you enjoy writing, I think that as long as you enjoy what you are doing it makes it all worthwhile. I’ve always said the second it becomes a chore is the second I will stop blogging. I love your style Chris, I really can envisage myself in the places you write about. Can’t wait to read your posts when you get back from Abu Dhabi. Safe Travels 🙂
