4 Ways To Make Moving House a Little Easier

Moving House

Whether it’s to the other side of the world, a neighbouring city or even the next street, moving house is one of the most stressful life events of all. There is so much to think about, so much that could go wrong, and a lot of emotions running high. It’s impossible to plan for every eventuality and avoid stress completely. But there are things you can do to make moving day run that little bit smoother and help the whole family transition into their new home smoothly.

Team ESLT are currently looking for a new HQ and although we are very excited about finding the perfect house, we are not filled with joy when we think about the actual move. However, as we have moved a number of times before we are sure it will not be as stressful as previous moves and that’s because we have picked up some tips and tricks along the way to make the process easier.

So if you’re looking for some recommendations on how to make the big event a little easier on yourself, check out the list below for some useful ideas.

Start Packing early when moving house

Start Early

This first point is perhaps the most important of all. However much time you think you will need to get everything ready for the move, you are likely to need considerably more. So start early. Basically, as soon as you know for certain you are moving – start getting ready for your move.

First things first, donate or throw out anything that you don’t want to take with you. Start with the most cluttered areas – the loft, the garage, the basement – and be brutal. Because you are paying for (in both time and money) everything you decide to move.

If you’ve got a lot of junk that you can’t donate or sell on, it’s worth hiring a skip or dumpster early on. Because it can be expensive to get rid of certain materials and this way (transport, some refuse centres charge etc) – all you have to do is get it all outside the house.

Once you’re rid of unwanted items, it’s time to get packing…

Organisation

The trick to efficient packing (and unpacking) is organisation. There are a couple of key things to consider here.

First, write-up a room-by-room inventory of your items so you know exactly what you had before the move. Tick items off as you pack them and number boxes in accordance with your inventory.

It is useful to label all of your boxes on each side. What room is this box destined for, what number is it on the inventory, and what (generally speaking) does it contain? This will especially help you not get mixed up if you are planning on renting a self storage in Wimbledon. It will make it quicker for you or your removal guys to get the boxes to the right spot. Another top tip is to use coloured tape for a quick visual queue as to which room the box is head. Blue to the kitchen, red to the master bedroom etc.

Work With Professionals when moving house

Work With Professionals

I know it can be tempting to cut costs and enlist a buddy to help you move. But honestly – if you’re transporting anything more than a small bedroom full of furniture, you’re better off working with a professional moving company (like https://www.mybekins.com/offices/thousand-oaks-ca-movers/.)

The expertise of professional movers will make the whole experience quicker, easier, and a lot less stressful for you. It also means you won’t find yourself stuck on the stairs with a sofa that looked a lot lighter twenty minutes ago.

Just be sure to meet with to devise a clear and complete plan. Also, ensure you can do all you can to make their job easy.

Ideas For Moving Day

Last but not least, here are a few quick ideas for moving day.

  • Hire a baby sitter (and a pet sitter!): generally speaking, children and pets are very little help when it comes to moving house. But you can be sure they will get under someone’s feet, get up to mischief, or get lost. Book a sitter in advance.
  • Pack an essentials bag: what are you going to need during the first night in an un-packed house? Pyjamas, toothbrush, sleeping bag? Don’t get caught out.
  • Keep your valuables safe: important documents, IDs, keys, medication, laptops, jewellery – anything you want to keep an eye on, leave them with family or lock them somewhere safe. It’s so easy for things to get lost on moving day!
