Love Ancient Civilisations? Check Out These 3 Must Visit Destinations

Ancient Civilisations - Machu Picchu, Peru

The world is full of fascinating ancient sites. These range from those that were hidden from invaders to those that were major economic centres. You can learn a lot and view different types of architecture at each of them. From the Pyramids built by the ancient Egyptians to the open air musuem Rome in Italy. However, some of the most famous (and most visited) in the world can be found in South America and Mexico. We have therefore put together this list of 3 must-visit destinations if historic sites and ancient civilisations are your thing.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan citadel that was discovered by Spanish conquerors. The altitude in this area is high, so you will need to take it easy when you first arrive in Peru. Follow advice for preventing altitude sickness and know how to treat the sickness if it occurs. It’s advisable that you’re in good physical shape when visiting in order to tackle the hike to Machu Picchu.

Buy your tickets in advance to ensure you’ll get to see the site. This is because only a certain number of visitors can visit at any one time. It’s important to note that you cannot take food and drink to Machu Picchu either. You’ll want to eat a good breakfast before making the trek. The stunning views in the Andean peaks make the journey worth it.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza, Mexico

The Mayan City of Chichen Itza was known for having a diverse population. Visiting Chichen Itza is a particularly unique thing to do, as it makes UNESCO World Heritage’s list of New 7 Wonders of the World. During the spring and autumn equinox, the northwest corner of the Temple of Kukulkan casts a serpent-like shadow down the staircase.

Other interesting structures in Chichen Itza are the Great Ball Court, the Sacred Cenote, the Tzompantli, and Temple of the Warriors. Hire a tour guide if you would like to learn interesting facts about everything you see at Chichen Itza. You’ll be busy for two to three hours looking around the site. Early morning is usually a good time to visit if you want to avoid large crowds.

Chan Chan

Chan Chan Ruins

Chan Chan was the largest pre-Columbian city in South America; over 30,000 people once lived here. This ancient city belonged to the Chimus until they were overthrown by the Incas. The Chimus have distinct architectural styles, pottery designs and textiles. You’ll have to pay an entrance fee to enter Chan Chan.

Hire a tour guide to learn about the amazing site. The Chimu Kingdom has an interesting history and culture. Each king, for instance, had to build their own palace because the former palace was turned into a mausoleum after the previous king died.

These three ancient South and Central American civilisations are beautiful, must-see sites to visit. You’ll be amazed at what you learn when you hire a tour guide to take you through the site.
