Why We’re Putting Off Visiting Our Dream Destinations

Why We Are Putting Off Visiting our Dream Destinations

We’re sure most people have a destination bucket list. You know the place you want to visit in your lifetime. We certainly do and as each year passes we are lucky enough to say ours is becoming smaller (although we keep adding to it naturally). There are a few places on our list that we consider to be the elite dream destinations. These are the ones that when we visit them we are going all out – first-class plane tickets, limousine transfers and a private butler would be nice too. Our top three are currently Bora Bora, Greenland and Madagascar. There is technically nothing stopping us but in reality, there is – a few things actually.

So why are we putting off visiting our dream destinations?

Money, Money, Money

Money is a massive factor. It does, after all, make the world go round or at least allow us to go around the world. As mentioned above when we visit these places we want to go all out. Therefore we need the spondoolies to be able to do that. In reality, we spend a lot of money on travel every year. If we added up how much we spend on all the ‘little’ trips in a 12 month period it would probably add up to more than a trip to one of our dream destinations would cost. But that would mean we only got one break a year. Yes, I know a lot of people don’t even get that so we can’t really use it as an argument, but we are. When you work hard and save hard and prioritise travel other other hobbies because of your sheer love of it – one two week break just wouldn’t cut it. Therefore, for now, until we either win the lottery, save up enough or retire we cannot afford to visit them (and still travel at the rate we are currently).

Time

As we both work full time we only get a limited number of days we can take to travel. So, we like to spread them as equally as possible throughout the year. This then means we always have something to look forward too. Madagascar and Greenland we could easily manage a couple of weeks in each of them. Therefore making this point void for those two. It’s Bora Bora where two weeks simply would not be enough purely because of the travel time associated with flying to the other side of the world. The last time we visited Australia Vicky took her full year’s entitlement of leave in one chunk (6 weeks) which . meant we could explore for longer and it made the 24 hour slog to get there worthwhile. However, it did mean that she had no leave to take for the rest of the year which was HARD work. Therefore Bora Bora is top of our post-retirement destination list as time will not be an issue then.

What If It Disappoints?

This is the biggest one for us. We’ve spent years googling images of them, reading travel guides and watching tv programmes featuring them. But what if we have romanticised our dream destinations so much the reality does not live up to the expectation and we are left disappointed by them? That would be a tough pill to swallow, especially as all three destinations certainly cost a pretty penny to visit. We’re sure they are all wonderful and completely worthy of being on our dream destinations list, but there’s always that niggling doubt in the back of our minds that we may not enjoy as much as we thought we would. But in reality, if we always thought that way, we’d never go anywhere, would we? Have you ever visited one of your dream destinations only to be disappointed by it? Let us know.
