Planning Our Alternative Babymoon

Dubai, UAE

The term babymoon is a relatively new one and if you’re not familiar with it, it means the little (or big depending on time and budget) holiday parent(s) take before their little bundle of joy is born. We know a lot of people including many of our friends who have indulged in one and really appreciated the benefits of having a babymoon offers. As we are adopting (imminently), we have agreed that we should not let the opportunity for a holiday pass us by. Therefore we have decided to have our very own alternative babymoon. Just because we’re not having our child/children biologically doesn’t mean we should miss out on a few days chilling out in the sun. Therefore, we are heading to Dubai for 5 glorious nights.

Why Dubai?

Having visited Dubai before (3 years ago) we know what to expect from the city. Many people consider Dubai to be Marmite, with many loving it and many hating it. We obviously fall on the loving it side. So much so Mr ESLT and I had (many moons ago) even considered packing up our worldly possessions and moving to Dubai as it’s a great base for exploring Asia (and the tax-free wages are a massive draw too).

We know that we will be on the receiving end of great customer service and hospitality throughout our stay. It is modern and clean with great facilities and amenities. And most importantly, the weather in Dubai is going to be way better (fingers crossed) than in the UK at this time of year – bring on the sunshine!

Also, having visited Dubai before we have visited the majority of the big tourist attractions – Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, The Palms etc. This means we will be less likely to want to do stuff or venture far from our sun loungers during this visit. Meaning we can simply kick back and relax, which is the main aim of a babymoon. Whereas when we visit places we have never been before, there is no way we can just sit still. We normally have a full itinerary planned and printed off before we even land at our destination. The fear of missing out is real!

What Do We Plan To Do?

We call it an alternative babymoon as Vicky will not be waddling around 7 months pregnant complaining about her swollen ankles and being too hot (well she might but it won’t be pregnancy related). However, we would still like the idea behind a traditional babymoon to shine through. What’s that? It’s what we alluded to before – to simply do nothing!

Just as carrying a baby can drain you physically, the adoption process has drained us mentally. We need a break. Time is needed for us to sit back and actually think about the life-changing decisions we have made and what we have actually been through and achieved over the past 12 months. And the best part about it? We can do it over a glass of wine or ten. Yep booze on our babymoon is not banned.

We have also timed our stay in Dubai to ensure we are in the city on a Friday. Because what are Friday’s in Dubai famous for? Friday brunch of course. If you can imagine every type of food in the world and picture mountains of it – you’re pretty much-envisaging a Dubai Friday brunch which can be found at almost all hotels and restaurants in the city. Last time we visited Dubai we went hit the buffet tables too hard and too fast and ended up defeated by it quickly and having to sleep it off. Therefore, this time we are going to pace ourselves and savour the dishes and fruity cocktails on offer, all while wearing loose fitting and forgiving clothing of course.

Why We Plan To Chill

Simple really – life is about to change. Obviously for the better (of course). This is something that we have wanted and strived for a very long time, it is not an accident or a mistake. Our child/children will be very loved and very wanted. But it is going to be different and at times trying, hard and difficult. This means for one last (selfish) hurrah, we want it to just be us. After 13 years of it just been us, you may think we’d have had enough by now. But the truth is we genuinely do enjoy spending time together. This means the addition of an extra little person (or people) is going to be very new for us.

Therefore, we want the opportunity to say goodbye properly and respectfully to that (fun, wild and often reckless) chapter of our lives and prepare to start a new one. One we cannot wait to start turning the pages on as soon as possible. Do you have children? Did you have a babymoon? If so we’d love to know where you spent yours. Or do you think they are new fangled nonsense?
