Guest Interview – Miles Away From Home

This week’s guest post comes from Undine (also known by her alias Evangelina), travel blogger behind Miles Away From Home. She explains ‘Since I can remember I love traveling and discovering the world. I grew up in Germany and when I was 14, I made up my mind to go overseas. After finishing College, I moved to the US, barely 19 and worked as an Au-pair for two years. Just before I was supposed to move back, I met my husband and “the rest is history” as they say. I got the love for traveling from my parents already at birth. My parents were the adventurous types and moved with their kids for five years to Iran where I made my entrance.’

1. What is your name and where do you come from?

My name is Undine and I am originally from Germany, a small village in the Alps, south of Munich. I live since 25 years in upstate New York/ USA.

2. What sort of traveler are you? Full time/ part time/ business/ backpacker etc.?

I am only a part time traveler but a full time dreamer about potential destinations. I constantly look at travel brochures, travel website and variations of lonely planet books like “the Europe book”, “the travel book” or “the cities book”.

3. How do you fund your traveling?

My husband and I travel when he has vacation. We try to be on the road for 11-12 weeks spread out throughout the year and chances are, you will see us at some airport, just coming or just leaving.

4. Where is the best place you have ever been and why?

Hm, India comes to mind. We visited northern India and it was like diving into a fairy tale. I have never seen as many deep, rich and vibrant colors as in Rajasthan.

I also love Paris, the way of the French, the food, the history, the monuments that are bigger than life – Paris has it all.

But I also love Northern Ireland. Nature has a unique beauty, wild and raw. I love the ruggedness of it.

But honestly, I love so many places – Croatia is fabulous, Turkey is wonderful, Japan is fascinating, you have to love Italy and Peru is stunning. I have a very long list of favorites.

5. Where is the worst place you have ever been and why?

I don’t think I have been anywhere that I really disliked. Maybe Naples/ Italy was a bit shady and chaotic but I would like to give the city another try.

6. Do you have a “bucket list” if so, where are the 3 top places on it?

– Uzbekistan, and it’s going to happen this year!

– “The golden ring” on the outskirts of Moscow.

– Namibia, that’s a far stretched dream but you never know.

7. What 3 things (apart from the essentials  food/ water etc) do you always travel with?

My camera. I will not go on a trip without it.

My travel journal which I am writing since almost 20 years.

A minimum of three books.

8. What makes you happy and why?

Spending time with my husband and exploring a new place makes me happy. Traveling is our No. 1 hobby and I can beautifully combine it with my other favorite hobby – photography. Works hand in hand.

9. How long have you been blogging and when did you start?

I started writing my travel blog only this year. I have been to 79 countries and have some good stories to share.

10. What makes your blog unique and why should people read it?

I try to tell a story with my blog. My strength is photography and as you know “a picture can tell a 1000 words”. I like to show people what a certain place is like with pictures but also describe it with words and tie both together.

My ultimate goal is to have a person read my blog and say “wow, I want to go there!!” I want to inspire people and get them dreaming about a destination they might not haven been to yet.

From ESLT – thank you Undine for taking the time to answer our questions. Safe Travels 🙂
