This week’s guest post comes from Colleen, blogger behind Expert Home Tips and Magic Freebies UK. She explains she is ‘A lifelong biscuit addict. Obsessed with recipes, cooking & eating. Slightly lazier than the average bear, so likes writing about life hacks & discovering the quickest / easiest way to do things.’
1. What is your name and where do you come from?
My name is Colleen and I live in Surrey, England.
2. What sort of traveller are you? Full time / part time / business / backpacker etc?
I travel whenever I can get the time off, so I guess you could call me a part-time traveller!
3. How do you fund your travelling?
I’m a content writer for a few websites. I get to write about travelling tips on one of the sites – the other is all about freebies (which may seem pretty odd, but check out Magic Freebies UK if you want to know more!).
4. Where is the best place you have ever been and why?
Ooh that’s a tricky question! I can’t get enough of Thailand because of the food, the people and all the amazing things to see. I love to take photos so for that it’s the perfect setting – vibrant rich colours from the architecture, clothing and foods.
At the same time I also love to visit the South of France. It’s beautiful in a different way and I love the food, going to restaurants and markets is always a wonderful experience.
Other travellers from the England probably started off by exploring France; my first trip out of the country was to Hong Kong. I didn’t get to France until late in my twenties so I’m still in awe of everything it has to offer, whereas others might not be any more.
5. Where is the worst place you have ever been and why?
That’s a tricky question – I don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere that I wouldn’t recommend to others. It’s always the worst places that give you the best stories!
6. Do you have a Bucket List? If so where are the 3 top places on it?
I don’t have an ‘official’ Bucket List, but if I did the top 3 places I’d like to visit are:
Cetatile Ponorului Cave, Romania– my Romanian pal Bianca has told me so much about it, and I want to check out this fairy-tale place for myself.
Manila, Philippines– I was adopted from the Philippines and so far I haven’t managed to make it back – a travesty I know! One day I hope to visit Manila, where I was born.
Japan – I’m actually planning to go next year with a group of friends and I CAN’T WAIT.
7. What 3 things (apart from the essentials – food/water etc) do you always travel with?
A pashmina – a big pashmina scarf (or sarong) has multiple uses. You can use it as a blanket for sitting on, you can shelter yourself from the sun, you can carry items around in it, you can keep warm at night and you can wrap it round your camera to protect it from the heat.
My camera – a photo can propel you back to a holiday in seconds. I try to take lots of photos of food menus too, so I know what recipes to look up when I get back home.
A pillow – you might think I’m a bit mad, but if I have a long-haul flight I always pack my own pillow in my hand luggage. It’s far more comfy than the tiny pillows that you get on a plane and it’s something to hug if you encounter a little turbulence.
8. What makes you happy and why?
Food. I think about food all day, every day and the prospect of visiting a new country and tasting their local delicacies is the most exciting part of travelling for me.
9. How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I have been blogging for different websites for over 7 years. I started because I have always loved to write from a young age and it’s a good way for you to have your own little corner of the internet.
10. What makes your blog unique and why should people read it?
Expert Home Tips is all about finding ways to make life easier for everyone. If you have a look at our blog we’ve got so many unusual tips and hacks for life that you might not know about. For example, did you know that you can use Coca-Cola to clean your car wind-shield?
Our aim is to help people in all areas of life, whether you’re abroad, at home, anywhere!
The other website I write for is Magic Freebies UK – it’s unique because we find visitors freebies from around the web. But that’s another story…
From ESLT – thank you Colleen for taking the time to answer our questions. Safe Travels 🙂
