January 2017 – Monthly Round Up

January 2017 – Monthly Round Up

How can it be February already? Seriously, where did January go? As I’m sure most people did, we made some New Year’s resolutions – eat sensibly, save money and get more exercise. All of which were going great until we travelled. The only one we managed to continue successfully was the ‘get more exercise’ on’. However, we always struggle with eating sensibly and saving when we travel – if we see great food, we eat it and if we see pretty things, we buy them!

The month got off to a pretty slow start and the pain of going back to work after the two-week Christmas and New Year break was VERY real. Is it just me or has this winter seemed to go on forever? I’m ready for some sunshine and light nights now PLEASE!

North Yorkshire

The Angel Inn, Hetton, North Yorkshire, EnglandSausage and Mash at The Angel Inn, Hetton, North Yorkshire, England

Our first trip of the year was to the lovely The Angel, Inn in Hetton near Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales, England. It could not have been cosier – big comfortable beds, roaring open fires and amazing food! A great evening away and only a couple of hours from home and we even saw snow which made the dales look amazing! The Yorkshire Dales are beautiful and perfect for exploring, especially the countryside with its dramatic hills and scenery, patchwork dry-stone walls and river valleys is simply breathtaking. There are castles, ruined abbeys, stately homes and historic houses. There are also picturesque villages with narrow streets, antiques and artisan shops and two World Heritage sites.

New York

Our second trip of the month was a biggie! We packed our cases and flew across the pond to New York. We love New York and our trip reaffirmed it. We actually stayed in the same hotel, The Wellington, that we did on our last visit nearly 8 years ago and had a great time. It was a great base to explore the city from. We hit the ground running and did not stop – it certainly was an action packed week and we even had the pleasure of meeting up with Anisa from Two Traveling Texans. As we only got back yesterday morning, we have a lot to write about and we will be publishing our posts over the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, we didn’t find the time to head to Philadelphia as originally planned, but not to worry – it gives us a reason to return again soon!

Upcoming Travels

It is too difficult to pass on cheap flights, right? So when I got an email through from Ryanair advertising £9.99 flights, I quickly clicked on their site. As Mr ESLT loves Germany it made sense to look at what was available there. Lo and behold – £9.99 flights to Hamburg. As I have never been to Hamburg and Mr ESLT hasn’t been there since the early 1990s it made sense to book them. We are heading there for Valentine’s Day in a couple of weeks and we’re very excited to get our romance on with a Stein or two.

Travel Planning

The beginning of January saw us (last-minute – very unlike us) planning for New York but towards the end of the month, it saw us starting to think about the end of the year (yes, we are that organised/anal). Mr ESLT surprised me one day with flights to Abu Dhabi for the end of November to combat the winter blues and enjoy some winter sun (gotta love him!). Needless to say I cannot wait, however we have so much to look forward to between now and then I can’t get too carried away just yet!

Yeah we’ve not been to Hamburg too since 1996!
It would be good to know how the city looks like now!

Mr ESLT said it used to be quite seedy! Hopefully it’s changed a lot. We love Germany so fingers crossed it matches up to other German cities.

Wow, you’ve had quite a lot of excitement for only 2 months!

There’s always the boring times in between as well, especially the times I am chained to my desk for 9 hours a day! Ha! 🙂

I feel your struggle of eating healthy and saving money. Travel is just too appealing and it’s so hard to save money and eat healthy while doing it. I do get good exercise in by exploring a whole new city, though – I walked over 10 miles in one day when I visited Valletta last week! haha. Thanks so much fo sharing 🙂

Oh Valletta, it’s so beautiful isn’t it? We were in New York last week and we worked out we walked over 60 miles in 6 days – I thought that would counteract the cheesecake, burgers and lots and lots of M&Ms – boy was I wrong! It’s so hard to resist all the good food when travelling. I tell myself if I’m good when at home, I can have a treat or two whilst away. The saving thing is impossible – I just can’t do it 🙂
