Long-Term Travel Planning: Avoid These Big Mistakes

Long-Term Travel Planning: Avoid These Big Mistakes

Long term travel can give you the fresh start you’ve been longing for. You can escape the job you hate, see more of the world and live your life in an entirely different way. But before you even think about getting on a plane, lots of planning and preparation is required. Even though this is something you will want to do as quickly as possible, it should never be rushed. Every aspect of your travel plans should be given plenty of consideration. Otherwise, big mistakes can easily be made which could affect your experience. So to help you avoid this, here’s what you need to do.

Filling your itinerary with too many countries

One of the key aspects of your long-term travel planning process should be deciding where you want to visit. But some people make the mistake of filling their itinerary with too many countries they want to visit. While this might not seem like a big deal, it can have a considerable impact on your experience. Rushing from one country to the next can stop you from fully immersing yourself in a new place. You won’t have time to meet the people and discover what it’s like to live there. So rather than packing in as much as you can into your itinerary, be more selective. Use The Travel Hack to help you choose destinations that you want to live in rather than just visit.

Applying for a visa at the last-minute

Applying for the necessary visas you require for your travels is a task that should be completed well in advance. But surprisingly many people leave it to the last-minute. This can be a bad mistake to make. Many countries require that you send your passport to the relevant embassy, where it can be kept for up to two weeks. This can be impossible to do if you don’t give yourself enough time. Even if you don’t have to send off your passport, online applications can also take time to process. Not having your passport or approved visa on the day you leave could prevent you from travelling altogether. So once you know which countries you are visiting, use Etias and other application sites to get started.

Packing far too much

If you were intending in packing the entire contents of your wardrobe into your suitcase, you might want to think again. As you may not have travelled long-term before, it can be difficult to know what you need to pack. So it’s easy to see why many people make the mistake of packing too much. But doing so could leave you with too much to carry and a bad back. To prevent this from happening, visit sites like Travel Fashion Girl. Here you can find advice on what to bring and what to remove from your packing list. This can make for a much more comfortable travel experience but still ensures you have everything you might need.

Giving your travel planning the time, thought and care it requires will help you have a more successful trip. It also means that these major planning mistakes and others like them are less likely to occur.

as a traveler of nearly 6 years, I always find there needs to be a balance in how much you plan, I think your right and not to cram too many countries in at once. I find it best to have a good idea of where to travel but keep the itinerary loose enough because as we all know there will always be something you didn’t know about pop up and take your breath away 😀

I Couldn’t agree more. I have a habit of over planning as I’m scared I’m going to miss out on something but then maybe I’m missing out by over planning in the first place?! It’s a tough one but you are so right – how lovely to find a place that blows your mind when you least expect it!
