Growing up in Yorkshire on the East Coast of England, trips to the seaside were and still are frequent. There are several beaches in East Yorkshire. However, the one that has the most going on around it, making it a great day out for all the family is Bridlington. This seaside town is somewhere I have visited all my life on a regular basis, even more so since the children have come along. It is popular with locals and tourists alike and if you are planning a visit here are 10 brilliant things you can do in Bridlington, that will make it a trip to remember.
Admire the Animals at Bridlington Birds of Prey and Animal Park
The Bridlington Birds of Prey & Animal Park is an award-winning attraction. It is a family-owned park that offers a great day out. You will find the animals spread across 21 acres of natural habitat. With mammals, birds and reptiles, you will be able to see them up close and even have the opportunity to hold some of the animals including snakes, lizards and owls. Adults – £6.95, children (3-15 years) – £5.95. Family tickets and skip the line tickets are also available.
Become A Super Slueth on The Streets of Bridlington*
Having visited Bridlington more times than we can count, on our last visit we tried something completely different. We got the opportunity to turn into super sleuths and take on a spy mission themed walking Treasure Trail around Bridlington. Now we don’t want to give away any spoilers but it was a great and family-friendly way of exploring Bridlington and offered at the budget-friendly price of only £9.99. This Trail is approximately 2 miles long and takes 2 hours to complete.
Build a Sandcastle on Bridlington South Beach
Bridlington south beach is the largest of the two beaches in Bridlington. It is a lovely sandy beach that stretches for miles. This means there is still plenty of room for everyone even on the busiest days. There are public toilets within the vicinity, together with a paddling pool which is great to splash around in on a hot summer’s day. There are also beach chalets. Explore Bridlington Old Town
Just a few streets back from the bright lights and loud sounds of the seafront, you’ll find Bridlington Old Town. Many visitors fail to explore what it has to offer in favour of the beach, amusements and of course fish and chips. Its main claim to fame is that it was used as a filming location for Universal Pictures’ Dad’s Army’. If you’ve seen the film walk down High Street and see where Jones The Butchers, Mercers Shoe Shop, Marigolds Tea Room and Walmington On Sea Brewery.
Have All The Fun of The Fair
Bayside Fun Park and Carousel Park are two small coastal amusement parks situated next to each other. They are located just around the corner from The Harbour opposite some of the amusement arcades on Garrison Street. There is a range of rides available with something suitable for all the family. From small rides for little kids to fast ones for big kids. There are also food and games stalls. They’re not the biggest fairs, but they are a great and fun way to spend a few hours.
Hit The Amusements
The amusement arcades in Bridlington are always a firm family favourite. Are yourselves with loose change and take your chances on the numerous machines. From fruit machines, grabbers and rides for kids, there is something for all the family. 2p machines have always been my favourite. So don’t forget to bring a couple of quid to get changed into copper and try it for yourself. And the best thing about the arcades – they are a great rainy day activity to keep the kids entertained.
Indulge in All The Seaside Food
Doughnuts, waffles, ice cream, fresh seafood and of course fish and chips, whatever traditional seaside food you like to indulge in you will find it in Bridlington. Simply head to Bridlington Harbour and you will be spoilt for choice. There is a row of food outlets where you will find a choice of all the best seaside food you can imagine. Busy Bees has long been a firm favourite for yummy fish and chips. There are 3 branches in Bridlington all offering take away and sit in options.
See A Show At Bridlington Spa
The Bridlington Spa, located on South Marine Drive is a great conference centre and entertainment venue. It plays host to a number of concerts, gigs, plays, musicals and even an annual pantomime. It’s a great venue – not too big, not too small making it the perfect place to check out your favourite band or catch a show. Plus it holds a special place in our hearts, as it’s where we undertook our adoption training. We’ll always remember the amazing sea views from its meeting rooms.
Take A Pirate Boat Tour From Bridlington Harbour
The Bridlington Pirate Ship was built on the High Green in Bridlington old town next to the Priory church in 1979. You can take a 10-minute ride on it from 1st April until 31st October every day and weekends all year round (weather dependent, of course). You can also hire the boat for celebrations and private functions. The pick-up and drop off point is located at Bridlington Harbour. The ride costs £2.50 per person. Scenic tours include Flamborough Head, North Landing and Thornwick Bay.
Visit Bridlington Priory Church
Bridlington Priory (also known as Priory Church of St Mary) was founded around 1113 as an Augustinian monastery by Walter de Gant. The nave is the only original part of the building left today. The Priory was the sole parish church in Bridlington until the 19th century. Located in Bridlington Old Town, people are always welcome for public worship, private prayer or simply to admire the architecture. Opening times: Monday to Friday, 11am – 3pm, Saturday from 10am – 12pm.
