Many people overlook The Midlands as a place to visit. People often opt for either a trip ‘down south’ or ‘up north’ for their holiday/trip/getaway/staycation. However having visited The Midlands on a number of occasions we can confirm that if it has never been a consideration before, it really should be. The Midlands are made up of a number of cities, towns and villages. One of which we were very keen to explore was Derby. Therefore when we were invited to stay at the 4 Star Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland, one of the hotels in the Hallmark chain, we jumped at the chance to stay in the city.
Vicky had visited Derby before on a Hen night. Therefore needless to say she cannot remember much of it (tut). So our visit was one that we had taken the time to plan out to ensure we made the most of our time there. Having recently adopted two little girls, a night away in a lovely hotel was just what the doctor ordered and the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland did not disappoint.
The Building
Located directly opposite Derby train station, the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland is a famous landmark in the city and is perfectly located for people who chose to visit Derby by train. It also has a large on-site car park which is great as it means you do not have to lug your luggage far. Also for £8 for 24 hours, payable at check-out, it is a bargain, especially compared to parking at some other city-centre hotels across the country. Visitors must remember to enter their registration at check-in as no one wants a parking ticket as a reminder of their visit.
The hotel has only been part of the Hallmark chain for a few years, however, the building itself has been a hotel for the last 150 years. Originally The Midland hotel, this grade II listed Victorian building is a sight to behold. It is a landmark in the city and many famous people have spent time here, including Queen Victoria – twice. You can even see a copy of the menu she ate from hanging on the wall near the hotel’s restaurant and it is fancy!
If you are a fan of Victorian architecture, the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland will tick a lot of boxes for you. Not only does it have character and charm by the bucket load but also all the amenities needed in the 21st Century, which really makes this hotel a winner.
The Grounds
The grounds at the back of the hotel are stunning. With a beautiful lawn, it’s no wonder the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland is a popular wedding venue too. Standing on it, you really can not tell that you are right next to a busy train station nor in the middle of a bustling city. I imagine on a glorious summer’s day, the photos captured in this secluded urban oasis are amazing. And just look at the Autumnal colours of the ivy adorning the back wall of the hotel – stunning.
The Room
The hotel recently refurbished its 102 rooms. We stayed in an Executive Family Room with a double bed and a separate single bed. It was massive and perfect for when travelling with the kids. Having now taken a couple of trips with our kids we know exactly how much stuff/junk they travel with. Therefore if you are considering staying with your family at the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland, do not worry, they have you covered.
In keeping with the rest of the hotel, our room was decorated with a lot of dark wood furniture. As the building is over 150 years old, we thought it would be odd if the guest rooms were decorated in a uber-modern style. Therefore, we were pleased to see tasteful and in keeping bedrooms. Obviously, this isn’t to everyone’s taste, however, we loved it.
The room also had tea and coffee making facilities, which gets a massive thumbs up from us, together with loads of pillows (because come on how frustrating is it when you only get one?) and a modern en-suite bathroom with bath and separate shower.
The Bar
If you are anything like us, you enjoy a nice pre (and often post) dinner drink. Therefore, we grabbed a seat in the bar and indulged in a glass (ok bottle) or two of the Wine of The Month. A bar is always a good place to people watch too, right? And this one was no different. With a National Express coach party, a large group of people dressed to the nines on their way to an awards ceremony and even a couple embroiled in an elicited affair (or at least that’s what we surmised) it showed the variety of people who opt to stay at Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland.
The Brasserie
Located right next to the bar and opposite the reception, we found the brasserie. With dark wood tables, in keeping with the rest of the hotel, yet modern plush chairs and a cosy atmosphere, it was the perfect place to indulge in a delicious three-course meal. With a great choice of options including vegetarian and vegan dishes, it was tough deciding what we actually wanted to eat.
We booked in advance to ensure that we got a table and I’m glad that we did because even though we stayed on a random Thursday night in October, nearly every table was taken. Therefore, we’d recommend you do the same if you want to eat in the Brasserie.
The Evening Meal
Starters
- Crispy Calamari – Golden fried squid with garlic and lemon aïoli
- Herb Crumbed Halloumi Fries – Sweet chilli and coriander dip
Main Courses
- Grilled Rump Steak – Garlic roast field mushroom, roast vine tomatoes, skin-on fries and rocket salad
- Classic Fish and Chips – Crispy battered cod fillet, chips, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce
Desserts
- Chocolate Brownie – Vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce
- French Lemon Tart – Summer berry compote
The Breakfast
Following a great night’s sleep, we were greeted with an array of yummy food at breakfast. Served in the Brasserie we grabbed a table and helped ourselves to the buffet. With mountains of pastries, cereals and hot food which all seemed to be freshly cooked – there was something for everyone.
With a long day of exploring ahead, it seemed only right we treat ourselves to a full English washed down with lashings of tea (well, that’s our excuse and we’re sticking to it!). Is there a more perfect way to start the day?
Things To Do and See in The Area
We had a lovely day exploring Derby city centre. We wandered through the streets admiring the buildings and visiting the museums, including Derby’s Museum and Art Gallery. The stand out attraction for us was definitely Derby Cathedral. It has one of the highest church towers in the country. Derby Cathedral is a magnificent gothic building overlooking the city and well worth a visit. You can find it in the heart of the Derby’s Cathedral Quarter. Here you will also find several shops, bars and restaurants.
Also, as Derby is located on the edge of the Peak District it is a perfect place to base yourself if you want to explore further afield. We can highly recommend Chatsworth House and Gardens. It is beautiful and is somewhere we had the pleasure of visiting during our early dating days. We have loved it ever since and visit whenever we get the opportunity.
Hallmark Hotel Summary
We had a great stay at Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland, it is a lovely and extremely welcoming hotel. From the second we arrived until the second we left, nothing was too much. We had a very relaxing break, ate great/a lot of food and explored a new city. It was our first stay in a Hallmark Hotel, however, I do not think it will be our last.
