Skiing was once considered something only the elite could indulge in. Nowadays it is a sport/pastime together with snowboarding, that is accessible to most people, even budget travellers with many deals and offers available. There are ski resorts all over the world that offer runs for newbies all the way through to the pros. You just need to find one that is most suitable for your ability level. Maybe you’re not a skier but love the après ski scene, with many considering it just as important as actually hitting the slopes. With that in mind did you know you can combine the two by heading to one of the many ski festivals being held this ski season? But which is the best one for you? What is a Ski Festival?
They are exactly what they sound like they are – a party on the piste! When most people think of a festival they think of thousands of people in a field with rows and rows of tents. The crowds are still large, yet when it comes to ski festivals there is not a tent in sight. Instead at ski festivals, you will find world famous DJs and live acts, doing what they do on the slopes and the surrounding area. Ski festivals merge skiing and après ski perfectly. There are numerous ski festivals held around the world every year, therefore more than likely one that will suit your musical taste and budget. Maybe you have never skied before but like the idea of experiencing a ski festival? If so you are in the same boat as us. Therefore, we used the tool to find the perfect festival for us.
How Do I Use the Tool?
The ski finder tool is super easy to use. You simply answer 5 straightforward multi-choice questions and based on your answers suggests the ideal ski festival for you:
- Where do you want your winter adventure to take place?
- What kind of music acts do you want to see?

Based on our answers, the recommended ski festival for us is – Rock The Pistes, which is held between 17th and 23rd March 2019, at Portes Du Soleil, a ski area in the Alps between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland and showcases 35 concerts. The results showed us the following:

How Much Would It Cost Us?
Based on our recommendation of Rock The Pistes, we then went on to price up a trip. The best part of this festival is included in the cost of the lift pass. Therefore we priced up flights, accommodation, transfers and the all-important (especially when you are as accident prone as Vicky) travel insurance. Admiral offer Winter Sport Insurance quotes which include not only illness or injury but also lost, stolen or damaged equipment coverage, piste closure, replacement equipment hire and delay caused by avalanche cover too.
Flights: (easyJet) London – Geneva = £54 per person, return
Transfers: (easyBus) Geneva airport – Abondance (return) = £19 per person
Accommodation: (booking.com) Les Touristes Hotel, Abondance, France (based on 2 sharing) = £400 (6 nights)
Lift pass (inc festival entrance): Portes du Soleil = £232 per person (6-day pass)
Total (per person): £505 (approx) for a 6-night break.
As we have never skied before, we obviously have none of the associated gear. It would be pointless buying everything for our first outing on the slopes just in case we didn’t like it and never wanted to do it again. We would be the epitome of ‘all the gear, no idea’! Therefore, we would need to hire ski equipment too, which we would need to factor that into our budget, approximately another £200 each. Therefore, the (approximate) full cost for a 6-night ski break including festival would be £700 each which is a lot less than we thought such a trip would cost, making it a future doable option for us.
