Christmas can be an amazing time for a getaway, whether you’re dreaming of winter wonderlands or tranquillity in the tropics. While there are many traditional destinations, including the magical Lapland (I mean, come on – who doesn’t want to meet Father Christmas in person?), if you’re looking for something a little different, explore these four alternative locations for your magical Christmas getaway.
Looking for glorious sunshine, soaring temperatures and Christmas celebrations? You can find all three in Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu. During December, you can enjoy 29ºC heat as you lounge on white sandy beaches and take a dip in teal waters. While you’re here, make sure you attend the Honolulu City Lights. This is the annual Christmas festival with parades, live music, fireworks and 50-foot trees.
If that doesn’t do it for you, go state-side with one of these picturesque small towns, for a holiday that’s filled with festive cheer and American charm.
Do you really, really love Christmas? Decorate your tree in October? Start your Christmas shopping in summer? Then this is the destination for you. While not the most obvious choice, you’ll be amazed by the Christmas spirit in the city of Makati. This is because in the Philippines, Christmas celebrations start in September, with festive fun lasting for four whole months.
While Provence, may not be the first choice when it comes to a Christmas break, it’s ideal if you love Christmas traditions. Celebrations here are religious, with Midnight Mass, festivals and nativity scenes taking centre stage. It’s also the perfect place for foodies. Locals enjoy a decadent seven-course feast on Christmas Eve (seven courses for Mary’s sevens sins). Including 13 delicious desserts (representative of the Last Supper).
Alternatively, head to one of the historical villages of Alsace for a romantic Christmas.
Christmas Island, Australia
No alternative Christmas destination list would be complete without the aptly named Christmas Island. An Australian territory, this 52 square mile island is located in the Indian Ocean. It is home to waterfalls, deep azure-blue seas and an array of wildlife. Named because it was discovered on Christmas Day, this is the ideal destination to get away, enjoy some peace and quiet, and escape from all the hustle and bustle.
We all know Christmas can be expensive, from buying gifts to food and drink, so why not treat yourself to a holiday instead? If you’d like an alternative Christmas, then consider visiting one of these unusual holidays and have a magical Christmas getaway.
New Year Planning
Once all the excitement of your Magical Christmas Getaways is over, the New Year is a good time to review and consolidate existing finances. Creating a personal finance plan will help you see what payments you’ve got and where for things like credit cards, loans, rent and so on. By sorting your finances out early, you can start planning for next year’s Christmas getaway.
