Travelling provides us with a lot of opportunities. We can try new things, think differently and all-around push ourselves to be and do more. One way to do this is to limit our internet usage; there is a lot of value in disconnecting from the web for a little while when we find ourselves in a new surrounding. It’ll help us to see the destination more clearly. But it’d be wrong to say that there’s no place for the internet when we’re travelling: there most definitely is. In fact, for some people, it’s a necessity (travel bloggers for one). It can also point you in the right direction, keep you in touch with friends and family and also make travelling more fun. But it’s not always the easiest thing in the world to do. Below, we take a look at a few ways you can stay online, wherever you are. Not all of the options will work all the time, but at least one will!
Choose Hotels Wisely
You won’t want to have the internet all the time. However, just some of the time might do. A good time to have it is when you’ve got some downtime in the hotel, after your day of exploring. As such, it’s important that you’re checking that the accommodation in which you’re staying provides free wifi. Some won’t have it at all, while others will charge for internet access. If you have free high-speed wifi, you’ll be able to plan the following day of your travels in comfort.
SIM Card Options
It’s possible that you can use the internet data from your mobile phone contract when you’re travelling. If you’re in the UK, then you can use your data within the Eurozone without incurring additional charges (though it’s worth keeping in mind that Brexit may affect this). If you’re going outside of the Eurozone, then you could consider buying a prepaid sim card while you’re there.
How To Troubleshoot
There’ll be no shortage of internet options when you’re abroad, but if you’re ever tried to connect to wifi in new places, then you’ll know that it’s not always the most robust system on earth. As such, it can pay to be a little tech-savvy. Before you head overseas, learn how to find my IP address on Mac or PC; it’ll provide a useful tool when it comes to troubleshooting your internet access. Also, let’s not forget that one of the best methods for getting online when overseas is to know how to ask for the wifi password in the language of the country that you’re visiting.
Pay for Global Wifi
If it’s positively essential that you get online when you’re travelling, then it’s worthwhile looking at signing up for one of those global wifi providers, such as BoingBoing. You will have to pay, but you’ll find that you’re nearly always in reach of wifi access. As a general rule, it’s best to avoid connecting to free, public wifi, since they make it easy for criminals to steal your data, so stick to the paid options instead.
