Cold weather can ruin a trip if you’re not prepared for it. Therefore, it’s a good idea to plan to protect yourself from scalp to soles. Don’t forget your skin (moisturise, moisturise, moisturise), eyes (yes, it can still be sunny even in freezing conditions) and a great winter woollies set – hat, scarf and gloves, while packing your clothes. Here are just a few things that you should pack if you’re planning on heading to a cold destination for your next holiday.
Warm Clothing
If you can keep your body core warm, you can save yourself a lot of discomfort. Therefore, it’s important to invest in a thick, good quality coat. Heated jackets can also help you to keep the area around your ribcage nice and cosy.
Heated jackets offer unique features that help you keep warm. Most contain carbon heating elements and offer lithium battery technology as well as an LED display to easily change the heat delivered. Best of all, these jackets are waterproof and offer high loft padding to trap warm air close to your torso. Perfect for a cold destination.
Boots
If you’re planning to hike or you know the cold destination you are visiting is going to be wet or snowy, it’s critical that you invest in boots that offer plenty of support as well as weather protection. If you’re a fan of multiple layers of socks, wear all of them to try on your boots and purchase at the end of the day when your feet are at their most swollen. You can remove a layer of socks as your feet expand over the day, but if they become too tight, you’ll be miserable.
Invest in waterproof boots with insulation of at least 500 grams. For those who like to lace their boots tight, make sure that the tongue is waterproof and well-stitched. This is to keep water away from your feet. If your feet get wet, they will stay wet and will probably be cold inside the boot which could lead to foot health problems down the line.
Layer Up
Invest in synthetic vests/shirts to wear against your skin. A material that wicks away moisture is critical and will help you to stay warm. Cover this with fleece to help trap the warm air close to your skin. Over these layers, invest in a shell with plenty of loft or padding. Be aware that wearing a waterproof top layer will protect you from cold winds and precipitation. But if you are working hard and start sweating, you may feel clammy. A breathable 3rd layer may be a better option.
Therefore, a smart investment for any traveller is an oversized lightweight rain jacket with a hood to cover all your other layers. A final tip is, if you are a baseball cap wearer, put one in the pocket of this rain jacket. If the hood is too big, it can cover your eyes. The cap will prop up the front edge of the hood.
Your winter trip will be a lot of fun if you pack the right gear for the cold destination you are visiting. Being cold and wet is miserable, so you’ll have a lot more fun if you’re adequately prepared for the weather. Being snuggled, layered and having dry and warm feet makes the outdoors a joy.
