Europe: 4 of Our Favourite Cities to Add to Your Bucket List & Why

Mr & Mrs ESLT in Florence, Italy

A trip to Europe is a rite of passage for many travellers. The immense history, spectacular art and culture, and amazing food and drink continue to draw travellers. Living in Europe we have the added benefit of having access to budget airlines, making travelling around reasonably easy and relatively cheap.  However not everyone has that luxury. Therefore if you are planning a trip to Europe but don’t know where to start, we’ve put together a list of four of our favourite cities to add to your bucket list when visiting Europe and reasons why.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague, Czech Republic, Europe

It’s no surprise that this fairy tale land is quickly becoming a must-see European travel destination. We visited back in August 2010 for Mr ESLT’s birthday. Besides its distinctive architecture, Prague is known for its wealth of amazing historical sites. The storied churches, the magnificent Prague Castle and the famous Charles Bridge all provide the perfect backdrop for this charming city. Prague is also still a relative bargain compared to other more popular European cities, especially capital cities. Therefore making it a great choice for those budget-minded travellers.

Florence, Italy

Florence, Italy, Europe

Many travellers hit Rome or Venice on a trip to Italy, especially if it’s their first time in the country while neglecting to visit Florence. We have visited it twice so far. The first time back in January 2007 after only knowing each other for three weeks. And the second time for our first wedding anniversary in June 2012. This Italian gem should not be overlooked when visiting Europe. Not as sprawling as Rome, Florence makes the perfect place to get a taste of authentic Italian culture. It also has world-class museums, quaint restaurants, and friendly people. As a bonus, Florence is also famous for having the best gelato in Italy. Yum!

Santorini, Greece

Santorini, Greece, Europe

This idyllic Greek island paradise is picture postcard perfect at every turn. Santorini’s biggest cities, Fira and Oia, are located on the island of Thira. The black and red sand beaches of Santorini should not be missed. After spending the day frolicking in the sand and surf of the Aegean Sea, you will be treated to a feast of authentic Greek food such as tzatziki, stuffed grape leaves and Santorini tomato fritters. Be sure to leave time to check out the stunning archaeological ruins of this oasis, we promise you will not be disappointed.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, Ireland, Europe

Dublin is a true melting pot. Although the city clearly features a prolific traditional Irish culture, the largest metropolitan area in Ireland also boasts a variety of international influences. The friendly vibe of the city is evident the minute you step through the doors of any pub. Connect with locals over a pint of Guinness and you will immediately fall in love with the city. A tradition of classic literature and folklore, a bustling arts scene and a host of natural beauty make Dublin a truly unique travel experience. Mr ESLT visited back in August 2007 and certainly loved the Irish craic.

Europe is a great continent to visit and offers something for everyone. Obviously, these are just four of our favourite cities to add to your bucket list, but there are hundreds more just waiting to be discovered. If you have visited Europe before, what’s your favourite city for a European city break?
