The Antiq Palace Hotel and Spa is a 4 star hotel in central Ljubljana and we had the pleasure of staying there last weekend during our visit to Slovenia. The hotel was very easy to find from French Revolution Square where we had been dropped off by the airport shuttle – literally a 2 minute walk. The hotel isn’t difficult to find but you must keep your eyes peeled for the signs on the wall next to the doorway. The Antiq Palace is an impressive 16th century building which was once a private home and is now a luxurious boutique hotel with 18 individually decorated suites some with full kitchens and some with 300 year old frescoes. From the second you walk through the door you feel like you are stepping back in time to an era of grandeur and decadence but with all the mod cons.
On arrival we were introduced to Albina and Cees who sat with us and explained all the facilities and amenities available at the Antiq Palace Hotel and Spa. We really enjoyed this personal touch which added to the feeling of staying with friends rather than in a large faceless hotel. They also gave us the low down on Ljubljana and what the city is like including recommendations regarding what to do, what to see and what to eat. We also learnt that this charming hotel is also part of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World group. During our chat the very helpful receptionist Erik had taken our cases to our suite.
We stayed in Suite IV at the front of the hotel. When we opened the door we were blown away at the size of the suite. It was bigger than our first house with white walls, high ceilings, beautiful wooden floors and lots of floor to ceiling windows letting in so much light. Our suite had a massive living area complete with dining table, sofa, TV and mini bar (surcharge), a perfect space for chilling out or enjoying room service which is available and delivered directly to your door.
The master bedroom was massive with a great big and very comfortable bed. There was also a table, which we didn’t need to use, but great for guests staying on business especially because of the free wifi thought the building. Together with a couple of chairs in the window which was great for reading in with all the natural light streaming in behind you. Our suite also had a second bedroom with double bed which we didn’t need to use but would have been great if we had been travelling with another couple or children.
Our bathroom was very clean and fully functional, complete with toilet, bidet, sink and the funkiest bath/shower we had ever seen! Seriously it looked like a time machine. It had so many different settings and with plenty of hot water it certainly woke us up in a morning. I also loved the complimentary toiletries that were provided especially the shower gel, which smelt divine.
The Antiq Palace has lots of welcoming, quiet seating areas were you can relax with a cup of tea or one of the local Slovenian liquors on offer or grab some leaflets from the concierge table and plan your days in Ljubljana. There is also a glorious courtyard where on summer days you can have breakfast or simply bask in the sunshine.
Talking of breakfast, it really was one of the best continental spreads I have had the pleasure of choosing from. With a choice of teas and coffees, cereals, fresh pastries, fruit juices, meats and cheeses there was something for everyone and it certainly set us up for our days exploring Ljubljana. There was also the luxury of eggs on request, pate, two different types of caviar and sparking wine which made the breakfast served at the Antiq Palace extra special.
The hotel also has a great function room which is used on a regular basis for both corporate events and intimate weddings. The walls are lined with photographs of all the famous people from around the world that have stayed at the hotel, there was a lot of them. Again a lovely light and airy space which can be adapted depending on the function.
The hotel also has a beautiful spa area complete with three different saunas and secluded hot tub. This area can be booked for exclusive use – perfect for a romantic break or honeymoon. The area can be set up with candles and music making the area and experience very special. In house treatments can also be organised via reception should you want a massage or other treatment during your stay.
There is also a decent sized gym in the building with a reasonable number of equipment pieces. During our stay we didn’t see anyone using the gym however there was plenty of room in there for at least half a dozen people should they have wanted to. Mr ESLT also informs me that the machines were of very high quality.
Another major benefit of staying at the Antiq Palace and Spa is it’s location. It is located one block back from the Ljubljanica River where all the bars and restaurants are located. Making it the perfect place to stay if you want everything on your doorstep and within walking distance. Tourism is on the up and up in Ljubljana but at the moment you can certainly get great value for money in this city and the Antiq Palace is no different. The cost of a 3 night stay in this hotel is still actually cheaper than one night in a same star hotel in somewhere like London.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Antiq Palace Hotel and Spa. I think it’s important to remember this is not a chain hotel and the decor is in keeping with the building. You will not find a stick of furniture from Ikea but instead pieces that make the hotel feel homely and luxurious, especially the numerous, gorgeous chandeliers hanging throughout the building. During our stay there was also a lot of fresh flowers in the reception area, which smelt absolutely gorgeous and made the area very welcoming. All the staff we came into contact with were friendly, polite and professional and any question we asked were answered with a smile.
The only small issue we had during our stay was the noise from the street. We stayed from Friday to Monday and on the Friday night we found it very difficult to get to sleep due to the revellers in the street below us. However we were trying to sleep with the window open as it was a nice evening. Mr ESLT did shut the window and switched the AC which helped a bit. Luckily we are both quite heavy sleepers but I imagine it still would have been a problem if you aren’t. I imagine the rooms at the back of the building wouldn’t face this problem.
