Why Do We Travel? 6 Top Reasons

There are so many reasons why people travel. Once the travel bug bites, you will want to join the multitude of people, like us, who are always planning their next adventure. We are asked a lot why we travel. It really is a great question and one that there is not one straightforward answer to. In fact, it got us thinking in depth about why we really do travel and why others do too. The world is a big old place with so many different things to see and experience which means everyone’s reasons surely have to be different. Therefore, we have put together this list. We’d love to know which reason (or reasons) resonate with you – let us know.

The world has many different cuisines and there sampling them in the country of origin is a great reason to travel. You may want to treat your mouth to a fiesta by eating mole, tacos al pastor and tamales in Mexico. You will also want to sample the delicious street foods including tom yam kung, massaman curry and som tam in Bangkok, Thailand. Alternatively, you may want to dine on tempura, sushi, and sashimi in Japan. Across the globe, many people find that food is a fantastic reason to travel and it has been the reason on more than one occasion we have jumped on a plane. Just writing this is making me contemplate a culinary adventure. Just remember to check for signs it has been cooked in a hygienic way.

Help Others

There are many places around the globe where you can put your holiday time to good use by helping an organisation. If you love children, then you may want to help in an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Animal lovers may want to help sea turtles in Costa Rica, elephants in Thailand or cats in Japan. Also, the Appalachian Trail is always looking for volunteers to help keep the trail in good shape, cooks are in demand in a homeless shelter and help with landscape restoration is active in Arizona. You do not even have to travel abroad to help someone else, there may be organisations in your local area that are looking for volunteers – Google is your friend and will help you find them.

Learn a New Language

Did you know there are about 6,500 spoken languages in the world? Travelling is a great way to immerse yourself in a new one. While you are learning the new language, you may also want to consider teaching English as a second language at places around the globe. China offers many well-organised programs. This is also a great way of earning money while travelling, allowing you to travel further and/or for longer. If you’re interested in helping people who have fewer opportunities to learn, there are short-term English teaching travel opportunities in Sudan and many other African nations (some funded, others not). Regardless of where you roam, you are sure to come away understanding that people are more alike than they are different.

Bond With Your Loved Ones

Travel is a wonderful opportunity to bond and spend quality time with those who matter most to you. Especially because you can get away from the hectic schedules and responsibilities of daily life. You can take the children to visit their grandparents, or you may opt for multi-generational travel. Many extended families enjoy going on a cruise together or taking an all-inclusive holiday which often offers activities for everyone, while still offering plenty of time for people to reconnect. And don’t neglect your partner. Maybe a cheeky city break in on the cards or even a visit to an adults-only resort is calling your name?

While there are many adventures that you can have when travelling, others love to travel to have a chance to relax. You may want to consider going to a retreat in Bali dedicated to practising yoga. Alternatively, you may want to hide away in a mountain cave in Morocco. Others choose to go to Kenya where they can relax at a luxurious safari resort.

Of course, there are great beaches around the world that you may want to make your next holiday destination, including the Red Beach in Greece, Beau Rivage in France and Monterosso Al Mare (one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre) in Italy. You can also take a scenic drive and explore places like Chapman’s Peak Drive in South Africa, Aches National Parkway in the United States and Flores Island in Portugal. Regardless of where you choose to relax, you will almost be guaranteed to come back with a new perspective, ready to tackle problems that seemed overbearing before you set off on your adventure.

Practice or Learn a New Sport

There are many wonderful places to travel in the world where you can learn a new sport. Or even get better at a current one. You may want to go on a hiking, biking and rafting adventure in New Zealand. On the other hand, consider a biking tour of Vietnam or swimming with sea lions in Fiji. There are also great places to learn a new adrenaline-pumping sport. You may choose to go volcano boarding in Australia, freshwater cave diving in Mexico or ice climbing in Canada. Wherever you choose to go, you will probably return with tales of your wonderful adventures to share with your friends and family.

Regardless of why you want to travel, make sure you overcome any obstacles standing in your way to make it happen. The world is an exciting place to explore. Go ahead and tell the boss you will be back after your next travel adventure.
