This week’s guest interview is with Mark, travel blogger and photogrpher behind Mark’s Meanderings. His blog is for travellers by a traveller. He is based in the South West of England and loves exploring and meandering around the UK and the world.
1. What is your name and where do you come from?
Hi, I’m Mark from England, born in Reading – Berkshire, now living close to the Somerset/Dorset border in a town called Yeovil.
2. What sort of traveller are you? Full time / part time / business / backpacker etc?
I’ve never categorised myself as a type of traveller, but if I was too, it would definitely be part-time. Life hasn’t allowed me to do it full time yet, and perhaps never will, but until then I shall take every opportunity that comes way.
3. How do you fund your travelling?
I work a full-time job (Mon-Fri) in coordinating, teaching and assessing work-based learning qualifications, this job allows me to travel around the UK. If I finish work early it normally allows me to explore the place I’m in. To also help me travel to other countries I rent out 2 rooms in my house and work a part-time bar job on weekends.
4. Where is the best place you have ever been and why?
I would have to say Havana, you can read why in my blog on why I thought so
5. Where is the worst place you have ever been and why?
New York, I will write a blog on it eventually, but it was so depressing, dirty, busy, expensive and incredibly disappointing. It sadly wasn’t for me.
6. Do you have a Bucket List? If so where are the 3 top places on it?
I started thinking about writing one many years ago but never put pen to paper, still to this day I haven’t got round to following it up. I have a list in my mind of things places that I would like to explore and experience, so I guess in my mind I have one just not written down.
7. What 3 things (apart from the essentials – food/water etc) do you always travel with?
My Camera – Have a Canon SLR, which I have with me everywhere I go. Lots of things that come with this, batteries, chargers, memory cards, lenses etc.
My guidebook – I use Eyewitness Travel guides for all my travels
Walking shoes – I think the best way to see any place, is by foot. So always have some suitable walking footwear as part of my essentials.
8. What makes you happy and why?
I think in the current world that we live in seeing happiness in others, places etc. is what makes me happy.
9. How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I started and continue to blog as another way of sharing my travel experiences. I had always thought about doing it but I was challenged by a few friends to start writing about my travel experiences, feeling worried and wary about doing it I finally took the plunge at the end of last summer. With all the self-doubt I haven’t looked back at my decision to take it up.
10. What makes your blog unique and why should people read it?
Mark’s Meanderings gives a different and personal outlook on my travels around the country of my birth and the rest of the world in which we all live and travel too.
From ESLT – thank you, Mark, for taking the time to answer our questions. Safe Travels 🙂
