Everyone has their own idea of what the perfect holiday is. For some, it is two weeks stuck to a sun lounger cocktail in hand. Whereas for others an action-packed adrenaline-fueled adventure is more their cup of tea. Before we had kids we liked a big dose of adventure with a side order of luxury. However, since the kids have come along, what we need from a holiday has changed. Sunbathing is a no-no especially with small kids, you need to keep your eye on them and they would simply get bored too easily. Also, dawn hikes and full-day tours would be too tiring for them. Because of this, it is essential to find a happy medium that will keep them happy and entertained but ensures you have a great time too. Therefore, here are 5 great holiday experiences to have with kids.
Private Villa Holiday
If you are a sun worshipper and giving up your two-week break in favour of a totally child-focused getaway is not on your radar, why not opt for a private villa holiday instead? The benefits of a villa are that you have sole use of it, meaning your kids can be as messy and noisy (within reason) as they like. Also, some kids can be fussy eaters. By hiring a villa with full kitchen facilities you can ensure that you prepare food that they will actually eat instead of having to make do with what hotels serve or hunting around for a suitable restaurant.
Most countries around the world offer villas including many alluring Crete villas which offer a great base. You can spend days relaxing by your private pool or hire a car and explore your surroundings. Villas allow you to do what you want to do when you want to do it. They also allow you to holiday on your own timetable, again great if your kids are early risers.
Far-Flung Adventure
You may think a far-flung adventure may be too much for your kids to handle or you may think they will not enjoy or appreciate it. However, just consider the memories you will make together that you and they will remember forever. There are lots of potential options to ensure you all get what you want from your break. Why not choose a unique experience such as surfing in Hawaii, exploring the history of mainland Europe, or even taking luxurious Galapagos tours and seeing for yourself why these islands are at the top of many people’s bucket lists.
Granted, you need to have the time for far-flung adventures due to the longer flights required to get there and the time needed to get over jet lag, etc. Also, they can cost more than your average getaway but the experience will certainly outweigh the cost. It will also and give your children a unique, possibly once-in-a-lifetime holiday, that they will never forget.
Safari
If your children are anything like ours, they love animals. Any opportunity to see animals up close and personal is a winner when it comes to entertaining them. Therefore, taking safaris, especially in Africa, are great holiday experiences to have with kids. This is because you can combine a traditional relaxing hotel holiday with a trek through the wilderness to spot the Big 5.
With beautiful 5 star hotels and lodges and amazing animals, a safari is something the whole family will remember forever. Especially as many companies who offer safaris also ensure that several family-friendly activities are included in your holiday package. Therefore, ensuring there is something for everyone.
Get Back To Nature
We live in a world where we use technology frequently on a daily basis. From TV screens through to computers, tablets and smartphones, technology is part of our everyday lives. Therefore taking a break from screens and getting back to nature is a great way of reconnecting with our surroundings. It is also a great way of reconnecting with each other as a family.
There are a number of getting back to nature holiday experiences to have with kids. These range from glamping for those who like a certain level of luxury right through to wild camping for the more adventurous. We recently took our children camping for the first time and they absolutely loved the experience. Therefore it is one we plan to repeat regularly (granted this excitement may fade the older they get!)
Theme Park Fun
And of course, there are the obvious holiday experiences to have with kids. Theme parks are always a hit with kids and with hundreds, if not thousands dotted all over the world, we are sure you will find one that not only the children in your family will love but also the adults too. From the biggies right through to small independent ones, there is somewhere for all interests and budgets.
It is always advised that you book your tickets in advance of your stay as you don’t want to arrive at your destination to find out they are fully booked that day. Also, many theme parks also offer on-site hotels/b&bs/lodges etc which allow you to enjoy the added bonus of not having to travel far between your accommodation and the theme park you are visiting. Perfect for tired tots at the end of a long day of fun.
