Whilst it might prove all too tempting to jet off/set sail and depart these increasingly tempestuous British Isles once you’ve saved up enough money to do so and experience life in another country, we’re all liable to get homesick every once in a while. Homesickness is a big thing and there are numerous Brits missing home around the world. Britain is far from perfect – it’s always a “little bit nippy,” petrol is exorbitantly expensive, the M6 is a nightmare and our government has collapsed into an utter shambles in recent years.
However, there is still plenty to love and miss about the UK. So, if you’ve recently moved abroad or are planning to in the near future, here are a few tips to help remind you of home and stop you from missing jolly old Blighty quite so much.
Tea time
One of the top complaints that Brits abroad make is that they can never find a decent cup of tea. This is because, aside from the UK, breakfast tea simply isn’t that common. You’ll find plenty of Earl Grey and Green Tea, but when it comes to good old fashioned breakfast tea, it’s few and far between. So, why not get your family to ship you some tea from home? Tea is incredibly light, after all, so by using a service such as Parcel2Go, you should be able to have enough shipped over to last you indefinitely for a minimal amount.
Contact
There are many negatives that have arisen due to the popularity of social media, but one of the main benefits is just how easy it is to stay in touch with your loved ones back home. Whereas years ago you’d be forced to spend a small fortune every other week on international phone calls, there are now dozens of options available – from video conferencing over Skype to messaging over Facebook and everything in between. So, there’s no need to keep sending gifts abroad to let your family know you’re still alive, just Facebook them instead!
Decoration
Many of us who move abroad (particularly to a sunnier country) are content to let the initial décor of our new home remain unblemished. We legitimise that it might in some way tarnish the local atmosphere or ‘vibe’ of the place, but remember, just because you’re not in the UK anymore that doesn’t mean this isn’t your home! Make your house (or villa, or apartment) feel like a home by decorating it with pictures, posters and assorted accruements from your life back in Britain and it should quite comfortably soothe your homesickness.
Entertainment
Finally, besides tea, one of the things Brits missing home tend to yearn for is good old British television. Thankfully, whilst you once needed an expensive satellite installation to access the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 from overseas, it’s easy to do so now online using a service like Now TV. So just because you’re living the high life, that doesn’t mean you’ll ever need to miss an episode of Eastenders! Truly a remarkable cure for British homesickness.
