Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh’s first settlers ascended the heights of Castle Rock (which now homes Edinburgh Castle) in approximately 900 BC. Its elevated position on a volcanic crag, intertwined with its landscape, provided a naturally defensive position. The city has been dubbed ‘The Athens of The North’, thanks to its culture and architectural glory. The vibrant city of Edinburgh has plenty to offer visitors seeking to brush up on their knowledge and learn about its past. York, Yorkshire
York is the model of a historic English city. It is a quaint and pretty, historic walled city filled with character and charm. It also has more attractions per square mile than any other UK destination. These include heritage sites, a number of interesting museums and exquisite restaurants. York Minster, York’s Cathedral, is one of the most striking in the country; making it well worth a visit. You can also dive into York’s Viking past at The Jorvik Viking Centre, an interesting and educational destination. Durham, County Durham
A jewel of the North East, Durham is a peaceful city. It was originally founded on the resting place of St Cuthbert. This resulted in the city’s cathedral becoming a centre of pilgrimage in medieval England. The cathedral, which many regard as the finest Romanesque building in Europe, is still open to visitors today. It is also now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Durham Castle. Visitors can take in spectacular views of the two glorious buildings from the riverside, before heading inside to view the impressive architecture up close.
Bath, Somerset
Celebrated as a place of historical importance, Bath is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on seven hills, the city has been a centre for recreation for over two thousand years. It is home to some fabulous Georgian architecture and Roman Baths, which the city is named after.
Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire
The countryside haven of Stratford Upon Avon, situated in Warwickshire is one of the countries most stunning historic destinations. For most, the town is synonymous with William Shakespeare. His home (‘New Place’) is open for visitors to explore and walk in his footsteps. You can also discover how he rose to become one of England’s most famous playwrights. The River Avon meanders through the town and makes for a lovely lunchtime stroll. If visiting, make sure to stop by The Swan or The Royal Shakespeare Theatre – the lifeblood of the town, to watch a play.
