Baseball Caps: Choosing the Right Type For Your Travels

Choosing Baseball Caps

Baseball caps may have originated from baseball but they are most certainly not just limited to baseball players and fans. These have become a fashion staple for both men and women of course, but baseball caps have a special place in every man’s wardrobe. Unlike women, who can carry off a much wider range of hats with perfect elegance, most men don’t have too many options in the headgear department today. They don’t get too many occasions to wear a fedora or even the trilby nowadays, but the baseball cap is universal in its versatility.

That being said, you still need to choose the right baseball cap for your own comfort and chosen attire of the day. Contrary to popular belief, not all baseball caps are the same and you should get to know them a bit before choosing.

Matching Rules

As far as matching is concerned, there are just two primary rules to keep in mind here:

1. Do not wear baseball caps with formal wear

2. Do keep the colour wheel in mind while choosing a baseball cap to wear with the rest of your outfit

Structured

All full hats and caps can be separated into four parts, which are the crown (topmost surface), the pinch, the band, and the brim. Structured baseball caps have a stiff, supportive crown, along with a hard brim which allows them to hold shape much better. This is essentially what a classic baseball cap looks like, and they are arguably the best and the most versatile baseball caps out there. In fact, even major fashion brands like Balmain prefer the structured look.

Check out the recent collection of Balmain baseball caps on SSENSE by clicking here. Balmain prefers them in solids for the most part, but the luxury designer does not shy away from bright hues either. In case you are looking for something a bit more designer, beige and black monogram is a big hit for Balmain caps in 2022. SSENSE has the complete collection from Balmain, and you should be able to find a lot more than just solids and monogram caps from Balmain there.

Unstructured

Baseball caps are, by default, classified as informal headgear but unstructured baseball caps are even more casual. Nevertheless, they are definitely the more comfortable choice for hot and humid days. Having a completely malleable crown and a much shorter brim, they do not provide much protection from direct sunlight. If it’s humid though, unstructured, cotton baseball caps will make you sweat a lot less than their structured counterparts, which makes it a smart choice on such days.

Elastic or Strap?

If it’s a structured cap, it should have a classic strap, but unstructured baseball caps do better with an elastic fit. However, elastic fits don’t last as long as the classic strap, which is why Balmain, Gucci and other major brands exclusively use straps on their range of baseball caps.

Finally, a mix between structured and unstructured baseball caps is not uncommon these days either. They usually have a hard, long brim and a soft, unstructured crown. These might just be the perfect option if you are looking for something in between.
