Having lunch together on our own is a rarity. So when we get the opportunity to indulge, indulge we do. We don’t know about you, but the thought of vegan food conjures up visions of dry, bland and extremely boring food. But as it’s Venganuary and we have both made the decision to be more conscious about the environment, especially now we have children, we happily accepted the invitation to celebrate Veganuary at The Haworth on Beverley Road in hometown, Hull and try some of the vegan delights on offer in the hope we would be proven wrong.
The Haworth

The Haworth is a favourite with locals and students alike. Vicky, in particular, spent a lot (possibly too much) time in ‘Haworth’ in her late teens and early 20s. With great music, great beer and a great atmosphere it will always hold a special place in her heart. Especially as she also had her 21st birthday party there many moons ago….ah memories.
Even though it has obviously been decorated (probably a number of times) since then and is now modern and bright, walking through the door felt like walking back in time. The memories of Monday night pub quiz, playing pool on a Thursday after uni and of course, the Sunday afternoon hangover pick me up feast of burger and chips came flooding back. Told you she spent a lot of time there!
The Beer

Even though it is Veganuary at The Haworth, it is a pub. Therefore, we had to have a pint. However, we didn’t realise beer wasn’t vegan (eek!). Luckily after speaking with the woman behind the bar, we found out that they stock a couple of draft beers including Bud Light. It seems that a lot of drinks are not vegan therefore, we’re glad we asked before simply ordering our go-to drink.
Vegan Options

Again as The Haworth is a pub it did surprise us how many vegan options it has on its menu – which is obviously great. Especially as a lot of it is a vegan take on a traditional pub grub staples. We imagine eating out as a vegan can be quite tough, with the possibility of there maybe being only one or two options to choose from. Not at The Haworth, there was at least half a dozen, if not more. That made the decision about what to order extremely difficult.
Main Courses
Vicky – Moving Mountains B12 Burger, £7.95

Plant-based meat-free burger, layered with red pepper houmous, spinach, smoky soya and Violife grated mature – accompanied with either topped nachos or skinny fries.
Burgers are always the obvious choice for me when eating at a pub. Burger and a pint – they go hand in hand, don’t they? Therefore, as soon as I saw the Moving Mountains burger on the menu I knew I had to try it. It sounded lovely and when it came, it was massive. In fact, it was so big it was a little tricky to eat, but I love a challenge and worked out a way to eat it without creating too much mess.
It was obviously not meat, but that was fine. I wasn’t expecting it to taste like beef but that’s not to say it didn’t taste great because it did. Initially, I was worried about vegan cheese as it has a reputation of not being that great. However mixed with the tastes of all the other toppings (especially the yummy vegan mayo), I didn’t notice it tasting odd or even different to normal cheese.
Mr ESLT – Moving Mountains Hot Dog, £6.95

Plant-based meat-free hot dog topped with crispy onion, spring onion, diced gherkin, red onion, ketchup and French’s® mustard and served with fries and ketchup for dipping
Mr ESLT opted for the Moving Mountains hot dog. When it arrived it looked exactly like a meat hot dog. Mr ESLT also confirmed that it tasted exactly like a meat hot dog. So much so we had to double-check the menu that it was, in fact, plant-based (it is!). As with the burger, it was a great size and Mr ESLT had to resort to a knife and fork to eat it. Even without the mustard and ketchup, the hot dog was not dry which was what Mr ESLT was worried about when ordering it.
As with the burger, the hot dog was served with skinny fries. (We could have substituted these for nachos or sweet potato fries). However, because of the size of the burger and hot dog, we simply couldn’t finish them. That says a lot as we both have big appetites.
Other Vegan Main Courses Available Include – BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Kebab, Plant-Based Tikka Masala and Roasted Red Pepper & Onion Macaroni Bake
Sides
Sweet Chilli Cauliflower Wings £4.75

Ten crispy coated cauliflower wings, glazed with sweet chilli sauce and garnished with pomegranate seeds, spring onion, sesame seeds and vegan mayo.
Now, we think the reason we couldn’t finish our skinny fries which accompanied our main meal was because of these bad boys. Yes – cauliflower wings are now Vicky’s jam. Everything about them was perfect. It made her question why she has never tried them before especially as she does not like chicken wings. The crispness of the wing with the sweet chilli sauce and the coolness of the mayo was simply perfect. Again the serving was huge. Therefore perfect to share (if you have to!)
Conclusion

We think it’s safe to say we thoroughly enjoyed our 100% vegan pub lunch and taking part in Veganuary at The Haworth. Even Mr ESLT who was very wary about the menu initially left happy with his choice. It was tasty, it was filling and it was kind on the wallet – two pints, two main courses and a side for less than £30. The Haworth also offer vegan desserts including Chocolate salted caramel torte (£2.95) which sounds like absolute heaven. However, we simply did not have the room. So if you are looking for a pub which offers a great range of vegan dishes we can highly recommend The Haworth.
- AD – Invite. We were invited to indulge in Veganuary at The Haworth in Hull to sample their Vegan menu. However, of course, opinions are our own!
