Ways to Help You Stay Healthy When You’re Travelling

Many of us have New Year Resolutions. For years our main one has always been the same – do things that keep us healthy. This includes being more active, eat certain things in moderation and try not to put ourselves in situations that are dangerous. Since becoming parents, this is ever more important as we plan to be around for our kids for as long as possible. However, for some reason whenever we travel our good intentions go out of the window to one degree or another. When you’re travelling, you can look forward to seeing unique sites, eating awesome food and making lots of memories. However, you should always remember to take care of yourself, too and try to stay healthy when travelling. Time away from home doesn’t have to equal time away from accountability. These are things to do for continued health while on holiday.

Use the Hotel Gym

Hotels know how important it is for guests to stay fit or simply work towards their goals. That’s why any reputable and/or large chain hotel is going to have a gym. You’ll be able to keep up your aerobic or lifting routine and transition easily from the comfort of your room to the demands of the gym. If you have a tightly packed schedule, you might have to cut your workouts down, but doing something is always better than doing nothing. Swimming in the hotel pool, if it has one, of course, is an excellent form of exercise that’s also very refreshing. Check the hotel gym’s hours and see if you can come later in the day or evening when it’s less likely to be busy.

Plan Your Meals

If you’re on a new diet or healthy eating plan, you might look forward to travelling because of how it’ll give you an excuse for “cheating.” However, you can absolutely stick to your diet while you are on holiday/travelling. The way to accomplish this is to have a meal plan that you can meet, such as getting a certain allotment of vegetables every day. It’s said that 90% of diets fail, but yours doesn’t have to while you’re travelling. By planning meals, you can be more confident in making better food choices. You can also bring a supply of healthy snacks to keep you going until you find somewhere where you can eat comfortably and in line with any plan you may be following.

Drink Lightly

Being on holiday can lead you to go overboard with alcohol and negate the hydrating effects of other beverages, like water. From the pre-flight pint at the airport to the extra glass of wine with your evening meal, we’ve all being guilty of drinking more on holiday than we would at home.  Therefore you need to make sure you’re staying within your limits. If you’re going out for a night of drinking, keep yourself hydrated so that you can avoid a hangover. You also need to be aware of how alcohol could react with any prescription medications you’re taking.
