Australia: Sydney, Hometown Tour Guide

This month’s Hometown Tour Guide is Lucy, a blogger who has made the Land Down Under her new home. A lover of reading, travelling and yoga catch up with her latest post at The Unlikely Bookworm.  Here’s what she has to say about her (adopted) hometown….

What is the name of your hometown and where is it?

My actual hometown is a small market town in West Sussex called Horsham, but my current – and adopted hometown is beautiful, beautiful Sydney.

What, if anything, is your hometown famous for?

Our beloved Bondi Beach, Home & Away, the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, year-round sunny weather and our love for avocado on toast.

The top 5 attractions are:-

• Bondi Beach
• Sydney Opera House
• Harbour Bridge
• Taronga Zoo
• Royal Botanical Gardens

Are there any local sports teams? Where do they play?

The Waratahs and the Sydney Roosters who both play at the Allianz Stadium in Moore Park.

My 3 favourite restaurants are:-

The Winery – A candlelit oasis in the heart of Surry Hills, The Winery is a decadent spot for dinner with the best brownies in Sydney.
Bar Machiavelli – An urban restaurant with open brick walls and a lively vibe, Bar Machiavelli’s cocktails are cool; and their menu is mouthwatering.
Bistro Moncur – Nestled in leafy Woolhara, Bistro Moncur offers diners fabulous food and a beautiful setting.

My 3 favourite bars/pubs are:-

Sydney doesn’t do pubs in the brilliantly British way that the UK does, so since living here, I’ve adjusted my drinking habits from long nights in cosy pockets of London to sundown drinks with a view. My favourite spots for an afternoon prosecco or cocktail are:

• Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel, whose views are among the best in Sydney
• Coogee Pavilion, whose Sunday sessions are the best in town
• Manly Wharf Bar; the perfect place to while away a sunny afternoon.

Top 3 Hotels are:-

• Watson’s Bay With unbeatable views of the ocean and the very best in beach chic interiors, Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel certainly makes the cut!
• Bondi Yoga House – not a hotel per-se but a beautiful beach-side Urban Retreat with five gorgeous bedrooms and one of the best breakfasts I’ve tried
• Sydney’s QT – Cool and quirky, Sydney’s QT is located in the heart of the CBD, just a stone’s throw from a plethora of bars and restaurants.

Why do you love your hometown?

There are endless reasons why I love Sydney; the unending stretches of stunning coastal walks, the beautiful beaches, the brunches, the almost constant sunshine.

Who should visit your hometown?

If the above isn’t enough to entice you, the people are among the friendliest I’ve met; the food is among the best I’ve tasted and we truly do have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Best time of year to visit (weather): 

We’re blessed with good weather for most of the year but if you want to visit when the sun is shining and the temperature’s high then anytime between November and March is a safe bet.
