As we draw to the end of this chapter in the decade, what can we say? There are so many things that warrant the podium of top gripe this year, it’s not even funny! However, rather than complain, even though we have every right to, let’s consider what lockdown has actually taught us. Yes, life has a funny way of giving lessons and even though we may not want to attend them, they do end up imprinting themselves onto us. Here are some things you may have learned or can relate to.
Freeeeedom!
Holy moly, have we learned the value of freedom this year or what!? It’s incredible how fragile our way of life actually is. We read about things like the fall of Rome or the sudden demise of South American civilisations, but never in a million years did we think it would happen to us.
Okay, we’re not collapsing, but for the first time, we could see how we might collapse! Panic buying fights with strangers and mental health issues on the rise. These things have shown us what happens to us when we don’t have freedom. We are scared, lonely and in some cases, often terrified.
We think we will all appreciate our normal lives a whole lot more when we do eventually get back to them.
People’s true nature
Unfortunately, we have also seen the true nature of our loved ones come to the surface. Some of us have got along with each other better than ever. Gelling like an unbreakable team, we have come to each other’s aid, mentally and physically.
However, some have also come across a number of troubling traits that their significant others have. This has led to many married couples to think twice about their status. Thousands of couples have found lockdown to be the straw that broke the camels back and are now contacting divorce solicitors.
Solicitors play a crucial role in splitting assets and fighting for your corner during the court case. It’s something that many never thought they’d have to do, but the lockdown has shone a light on relationships doomed to fail anyway.
(This is in no way related to Mr ESLT and I – we are stronger than ever!)
The Outdoors
We’ve covered the need for better appreciation of freedom but actually, the great outdoors is a whole other case. Being in the park or taking a walk in the countryside is something that has been a saviour for many of us.
When we were told we could only go outside for 1 hour of exercise, many of us turned to our local parks and woodland. Walking through the woods, listening to birdsong and escaping reality for 60 minutes allowed many of us to clear our heads, recentre and forget for a little while what was actually going on in the world.
Maybe we should treat our countryside and parks with more care because they have been caring for us all this time.
Lockdown has been a teacher if anything. We have been shown some things about ourselves and of others. Our civilisations should endure (unless you believe some of the wilder conspiracies) but wow, what a wake-up call to all that we hold dear this pandemic has been.
Stay strong!
