Living in Europe, we are lucky that we can take advantage of budget airlines and hop from country to country for a reasonable price. It used to be that only people with a lot of money could afford a trip to Europe from overseas, especially from the US. However, if you can afford the airfare, it’s now possible to travel around Europe on a budget and have a great time while doing it. If you’re considering a budget trip to Europe, don’t make any plans until you read the following three tips to help you save money during your trip.
Stay in Hostels
Hostels appeal to travellers who want to save money while they’re travelling through Europe. True enough, the dorm-style accommodations and the shared bathrooms aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. However, for the truly budget-conscious, hostels can’t be beaten. Spending the night in a European hostel will cost a mere fraction of the price you would pay for a hotel room. If you’re up for an adventure, don’t skip this experience. Your budget will thank you and as a bonus, your social life could improve as well. A hostel is a great place to meet interesting people.
Lead Your Own Tour
Be aware of travel packages, especially a technique called cross selling. In this case, it basically means that a travel company may try to sell you additional add-ons once you buy the initial tour. These extra items might include an after-hours wine tasting with your tour guides or an excursion to see the local sights.
Chances are you don’t need all of these extras to enjoy your trip to Europe. After all, you can read a guide book and then look at buildings and art objects on your own and drinking wine is more fun if you do it in a local bistro. Possibly with the friends you have made in your hostel. Doing a little research allows you to become your own tour guide. See and do what you want, and limit it to what you can afford.
Go in the Off-Season
Basically, the off-season is the time when most tourists stay home. For example, many people like to travel to Europe during the summer. That’s the peak season, especially if you want the best weather. However, from a financial perspective, travelling in the off-season can save you a bundle. For example, accommodation will normally cost you only about half of what you’d pay in peak season. Plane flights, train tickets and meals are usually cheaper as well.
We hope our tips to help you save money in Europe proves a trip doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg if you know how to do it. Spending time in hostels, travelling during the off-season and being your own tour leader are just some of the ways you can save some cash on your European trip and cash you save in one place is money you can spend in another.
