About Us

Next up: Ghent, Belgium

Thanks for joining us (Vicky & Chris, a married couple from Yorkshire, England) as we Eat, Sleep, Love and Travel our way around the world! Between us, we have been to 70 countries (long may the list grow!) We have been travelling together since January 2007 when we took our first trip together only two weeks from our first meeting to Florence, Italy. We plan to continue to travel for as long as we are able to do so.

As we both work full time we stretch our holiday days as far as they will go and often plan trips and adventures up to a year in advance. Often taking advantage of early bird booking offers. Living in England we are massive fans of budget airlines and cheeky European city breaks, often taking half a dozen a year armed with our carry-ons and guidebook.

Are we travellers? are we tourists? Does it matter? We see cool stuff and have great stories to tell. We usually opt for one far-flung adventure per year and half a dozen or so closer to home ones). Even though we carry backpacks I’ll be honest we aren’t actually ‘backpackers’ instead enjoying the luxury of resting our heads on comfortable pillows in a nice hotel room with an en-suite bathroom!

So here you will find hotel reviews, city guides (including Top 10s) together with information about attractions and suggested itineraries – basically a diary of our travels and adventures. We hope you find our posts helpful and if you have any questions or suggestions for a post please do not hesitate to contact us!

VICKY

Who am I? I’m 43 and am married to my best friend and partner-in-travel, the awesome Mr ESLT. I live in a market town called Beverley in East Yorkshire, England. Don’t get me wrong it is a beautiful place to live, in fact, Yorkshire is beautiful you should visit if you ever get the chance, with lots of wonderful things to do on my doorstep but I need more….I need to see as much of the world as I can as often as I can….even though I HATE flying!

However, I work full-time (as a desk dweller) and have a mortgage to pay so jetting off at the drop of a hat for long periods of time just isn’t doable for me. I do however plan my trips carefully ensuring I always have something/somewhere to look forward to, often by scheduling a year in advance.

I get 32 days annual leave every year (together with Bank Holidays and weekends) however, Mr ESLT has set holidays so we must always fit in around his work schedule. I try to plan a yearly itinerary if you spot somewhere on my itinerary that you have been before I’d love to hear from you with tips and recommendations of what we should see, where we should go and what we should eat.

I also enjoy eating out locally (although I am always on a diet!) and enjoy the local cuisine of whatever country I am in at the time even though as a child I refused to eat anything spicy or ‘weird’ – now I can’t get enough of spicy weirdness. This applies to booze too, I mean come on who doesn’t visit Dublin and try the Guinness. The list of international beers I have tried is getting ridiculously long (long may it grow)! Cocktails are another weakness I have and if I spot a Cosmopolitan on the menu, you’ll have to hold me back.

I have been to over 500 villages, towns and cities in over 40 countries around the world all of which I have great memories of……mostly. If you want any tips, advice or information on any of the places please do not hesitate to contact me and I’ll do my best to help where I can.

MR ESLT

Mr ESLT….the man, the myth, the legend. But who is he? Meet Chris, 42 who also lives in the East Yorkshire market Town of Beverley in England. We’ve been married for just over 5 years and travelling as far, wide and often together since January 2007. He is now a Marine Pilot, riding the murky waters of the River Humber and has been for 13 years. Prior to that, he was in the Merchant Navy, choosing at 17 to get paid to sail the seven seas and see the world rather than taking the academic route.

His first posting was to Panama and from that day, he has never looked back. 14 years later and the list of countries he has visited along the way is very enviable (estimated at around 55) and like many an ole’ Seadog he has a number of tales to tell….. some maybe not so family friendly. I love to hear his stories of his time in countries which are no longer considered safe for western travellers and his run in’s with undesirable characters on the high seas and the threat of pirates!

Taking a shore job was a change of pace for Mr ESLT meaning no more flying off to far-flung places, however, it did mean sleeping in his own bed every night and being able to set down roots and build friendships and relationships. It also meant adapting to a regular working pattern with set time off work. It’s a good job I can take time off whenever I like, within reason, of course, otherwise, we may never get to see each other. As we have his rota a year in advance we always know when we can plan trips. In reality, this is great as we can often get early bird deals on flights and hotels.

The fact that we both love throwing our stuff in a bag and heading ANYWHERE is great. I am trying to get Mr ESLT to write his own Bucket List to see if it differs to mine. I imagine it will of course and I bet visiting Oahu is high on it as he desperately wants to see Magnum PI’s house! Mr ESLT is very laid back and if I suggest a trip somewhere he’s VERY unlikely to say no or he doesn’t fancy it. Therefore, I wouldn’t hesitate to book a trip that was a bargain without asking him first.

So how does Mr ESLT contribute to Eat Sleep Love Travel? Well I genuinely think without him I wouldn’t travel as much as I do, so I thank him for that. He is always my proofreader. I have a habit of banging out a blog post without even spell checking it first. And he is also the primary photographer for the blog which again I thank him for because most of the time his photos are fantastic.
