If you regularly read our blog, you’ll know we love cooking – chopping, stirring, frying etc. However, as a couple who both work full-time on different shift patterns, run a house, travel a lot and write regularly, finding the time and energy to cook and eat together is very limited and I personally do not enjoy cooking a ‘proper’ meal just for myself. Therefore, most of the time we grab something quick or, and please don’t judge, hit the take away. So when we were asked to try out Everdine which offer clean & wholesome pre-prepared and cooked gourmet frozen meals which are delivered directly to your door, we were keen to see how these ready meals differed from others and if they could stop us turning to the local pizza shop for a quick, no hassle dinner.
Value for money?
I’ll be honest we had never considered using a food delivery service before, it always seemed to me to be a service that people with more money than sense signed up to. So when we received our box, I did my sums. Now, I’m no Carol Vorderman but our box contained 8 meals and cost £55.20 with free delivery, which meant each meal cost £6.90. For the quality and quantity of the food I think that price is very reasonable. Ok, a lot more than beans on toast but around the same price, if not less than a take away. Plus there is the benefit of the meals being balanced and nutritial rather than cheesy, greasy, calorific artery blockers.
Everdine offer a range of meals each of which are 450g and serve one person. I can be quite a fussy eater and I was worried that there wouldn’t be enough choice for me. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety available. I am not much of a meat eater, although I do eat some at a push, so was very happy to find a lot of vegetarian options. Mr ESLT on the other hand loves meat and fish and Everdine use meat and fish which are sustainably sourced, and again there was plenty for him to choose from. As we were gifted a box of 8 meals we chose 4 each. Here’s what we picked:
- Mediterranean Stuffed Peppers
- Black Bean Chilli Burrito
- Moroccan Chicken Tagine
- Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms with Goats Cheese
- Mushroom spaghetti Carbonara
- Tandoori Salmon with Red Lentil Dhal
- Sea Bream Thai Green Curry
- BBQ Pulled Pork with Boston Beans
Everdine offer delivery on Fridays and Saturdays. We chose a Friday delivery, which looking back wasn’t the best idea as we were both at work all day. Therefore, when our box was delivered we were both out. We did receive emails and text messages notifying of expected delivery and it also gave the option to track it. Our box was left on our back door step at 9.15am. I didn’t get home until 4.20pm and was panicking all the way home that there would be a soggy, inedible mess waiting for me. However the contents were packed in such a way that each individually packaged meal was still frozen to a reasonable standard.
All of the meals could be cooked from frozen, which was great as it meant that I could simply grab one from the freezer when I wanted one, no defrosting necessary. Most of the meals could be cooked in the microwave within 10 minutes, meaning they were extremely quick and easy. I did think surely by microwaving them it would zap all the nutrients out of them but on Everdine’s website it assures me that microwaving is one of the most nutrient-preserving heat-up methods. However, one of mine could only be cooked in the oven, which took 40 minutes. So if you are planning to take one to work to whack in the microwave and eat at your desk, check the packaging before you take it, as you may be left hungry that day.
I was worried that our Everdine meals would taste like many other frozen meals we have eaten before, you know a bit bland and watery, but we were very surprised with them. In fact I cooked one for Mr ESLT and served it up and he wouldn’t believe me that it was a frozen meal and not something I had prepared from scratch. The Everdine chefs Matt and Viresh are trained in Michelin-starred restaurants and the quality is evident. These meals were certainly a class above regular supermarket bought ones. Very tasty, full of flavour and not watery whatsoever.
Would I recommend Everdine?
Yes I would, obviously when possible cooking myself with fresh ingredients will always be top of my list but when that’s not possible then having a stock of Everdine meals in the freezer is a perfect alternative as they are quick and easy, something which gets a big thumbs up from me. Eating clean is something I need to do more and knowing that these meals will allow me to do that is great. With there being a large choice of meals available, I don’t think I will get bored as it will take me a while to work my way through them all.
- Our Everdine box was provided on a complimentary basis in exchange for review, as always our opinions are honest and our own.
