Cooking Up A Storm: The Taste of Your Holiday at Home

Gousto Subscription Box Wooden Spoon

I love cooking! I like nothing more than starting from scratch with loads of fresh ingredients and being able to see everything that goes into my meal. However, getting the opportunity to cook from scratch is extremely rare. As Mr ESLT and I both work full-time on different schedules we only actually manage to have a meal together once or twice a week. So when we do we always try to ensure it is a home cooked meal and that we both take part in preparing it. Having never tried a food subscription box service before, I was quite dubious when we were asked to try out a Gousto box, but we had nothing to lose – if we liked it great, if not we need never order another one again.

What is a Gousto box?

A Gousto box contains everything you need to produce a meal. By ordering our Gousto box it meant that we that we did not have to make a shopping list, we did not have to go to the shop and we didn’t have to weigh or measure anything. Therefore, saving us a lot of time as the box was delivered straight to our door on the day of our choosing. I obviously chose a date when I knew that Mr ESLT and I would be home at the same time for dinner. It was actually very nice walking through the gate and finding the box sitting on our back doorstep, it felt a bit like Christmas. It was packed well, all the meat was in cool packs to ensure it remained fresh.

What sort of meals are available?

I was quite impressed with the range of meals on offer and we chose ours based on our travels. We first chose the French chicken, bacon and mushroom stew served with parsley mashed potato as we had just returned from Strasbourg in France. Our second choice was the speedy spag bol as we love Italian food and, come on, who doesn’t love spag bol? From Turkish beef & tahini flatbreads to Moroccan honey chicken, cooking dishes from around the world seems pretty easy. Also, with a large range of vegetarian recipes there is plenty for the non meat eaters and with a Lighter section, for people who are watching their waistline.

How to order and how much do they cost?

Ordering was simple. I set up an account, chose the recipes that I wanted, selected the date I wanted and clicked submit. I then had the option to select how often I would like my boxes delivered. Prices are as follows:

  • 2 recipes for 2 people – £27.49 per week (the one we chose)
  • 2 recipes for 4 people – £41.99 per week
  • 3 recipes for 2 people – £34.99 per week
  • 3 recipes for 4 people – £51.99 per week
  • 4 recipes for 2 people – £41.99 per week
  • 4 recipes for 4 people – £59.99 per week

Our meals worked out to be less than £7 per person, per meal which I think is very reasonable considering the freshness of the vegetables. I was a bit dubious about the quality of the meat as I had not chosen it myself in the supermarket and when I opened the chicken to find out it was thigh meat, it did put me off somewhat as I would never personally buy or order in a restaurant chicken thigh. However, I cooked it anyway and if I hadn’t have known what cut it was I never would have been able to tell and now I will not hesitate to eat them in the future.

I don’t think we could commit to more than 2 recipes a week because as I mentioned before, we rarely have the opportunity to cook and eat together that many times a week and also the cost is a factor, plus sometimes I don’t want a full cooked meal every night of the week and some evenings I’m just to tired to cook from scratch. However, should our circumstances change we can increase our order at anytime, factor in holiday breaks and cancel our subscription at any point.

How easy were the recipes to follow?

We received a recipe card for each dish and as everything is weighed out and bagged up separately, they were very easy to follow. Be warned though if you try out Gousto – read the recipe card before you start preparing and chopping as you may need a couple of extra ingredients that are not provided in the box. For example, flour was needed for one of our dishes and I did not have any in the cupboard. I did however have cornflour so used that instead – it turned out fine but I really wished I had checked first.

Tasty?

Very. Mr ESLT preferred the French chicken, bacon and mushroom stew, whereas I preferred the speedy spag bol but both were lovely. I’d like to think that it was our cooking skills but in reality we did just follow the step by step recipe card. I’ll be honest once cooked the portions looked smaller than we would normally serve up. However, they were more than ample and filled us up nicely. Gousto really surprised us and we’re looking forward to receiving our next box!
